Anyone know the process of how Toyota register a new vehicle

Toyota are telling me that they “would need to see a copy of your insurance certificate as we legally need this to register and tax your vehicle once handover has been arranged.”, but of course my insurance company need to know the registration to check it out and insure it, if what Toyota is saying is correct, we are an impasse!  I have requested that they register the vehicle and await their reply.

If I hadn’t of paid my £1000 deposit I would have bailed out of buying the GR86 a long while ago, it is such a long winded frustrating procedure, really, really awful, they act like a tin-pot-company!

Use the 3 day insurance they give on new car, problem solved? Did they not offer this?

They already tax my car when they received it, then I lost 10 days tax due to collection on the 11th day of the month.

To get the 3 day insurance, they wanted me to send them a document with my no claims bonus on it, I only have one document, so I am not sending that to them!

Do they not accept a photo and send via email, try that.

About 10 days ago, I spent about 15 mins filling out the internet forms that they required and right at the end it said they wanted me to actually “send” a document with the no claims on it, nothing about a copy, so I let it slip. Then about 5 days ago, Toyota wrote to me saying that they noticed that I had started the process, so I explained why I would not send my only copy and would therefore give the free insurance a miss.  Then today, I received an email as explained in my first post.

Get the proof as a pdf from your insurer, think that's what I did. Didn't send them anything in the post.

Thanks for all your responses.  However, I have already replied to Toyota asking them to register the vehicle and road tax it at a later date, if it delays me getting the vehicle, so be it. They have not replied yet, if they do, then I can ask them about sending a pdf, so thanks.

Have you got a GR86, if so, what’s the clutch like, as I’ve seen a post saying it’s a bit like an on/off switch!

Good grief, what is going on with some of these dealers!

When I went to pick up the car, my salesperson phoned up Toyota Insurance there and then to register me for 3 days drive-away insurance, literally before giving me the keys! I don't remember having to go through so much hassle as you are being put through!

(To balance things, he forgot to activate it once I was registered so I was driving around for a whole day hooning around the countryside getting a feel for the car while uninsured... :fear: )

It’s not the dealer, it’s Toyota On Line, everything is done on line, as I said in another post, if I hadn’t paid my £1000 deposit right at the beginning of the long drawn out process, I would have given up long ago!

Today, 3 days later, I got a reply from Toyota Online saying that they want to register and tax the car at the same time, I wrote back and said that my insurance company will not insure the vehicle unless they have the registration number.  Customer satisfaction seems to have taken a back seat where Toyota are concerned these days!

Whether it is a dealer or online service, to register a car for the first time they have to tax it, and to tax it, insurance has to be in place.

So it has to be either your own insurance, in which case they will need proof of insurance from you, or the usual three day insurance provided by the dealer, etc.

With our last few new cars, the dealer used the three day insurance.

Well, my neighbour said “When I brought my car I had the registration number a few days before so I could insure it before I picked it up.”, she bought it about 2 years ago.

Yes that is probably the case. The majority of dealers have a stock of new registration numbers supplied by DVLA. Sometimes the dealer gives you a choice of number, and sometimes they don't.

Have you actually just asked what the registration number will be - different to registration.

When we bought two new Mazdas on the same day a few years ago, I asked for and got, consecutive numbers.

Whether the online service provides the customer with a choice of registration number or not, is down to them.

I didn't think going through on-line would be such a pain in the proverbial!

With mine, I got an e-mail from the sales agent about a week before the car, asking what registration I wanted, with a default one and a small list of alternatives. Gave my pick and it was applied to the car.

On handover day, I went down to the dealership, handed them the keys and paperwork for the Mk2, was shown the car which had the plates already on it, and I think it had already been taxed (Already paid for as it was rolled into the purchase cost). The sales agent got me to go through the 3-day insurance setup speil over the phone with Toyota Insurance there and then (The one that the aforementioned agent forgot to then activate...), gave me the keys, sent me on my way.

@olddriverI'm going through the same process with the GR86 online process, and like you declined the Toyota insurance originally until they started asking me lots of difficult questions.  In the end, because I knew the Toyota 3 day insurance was free, I didn't even mention I had any no claims to avoid the hassle of uploading proof etc.  All was accepted OK, no hassle.  Like you I am waiting for reg. number so I can insure with my insurance company.  They will accept a VIN number, but then hassle of notifying them later of reg number so would rather do it in one go. Also need to sort out the GAP insurance, but will transfer my current GAP on the Yaris (allowed one transfer and pay extra cost of increased value).  Feeling quite relaxed now, have a day off work for the occasion and booked a train ticket tonight for me and my daughter to collect the car on the 1st.  Have my first long road trip booked early September to scrub off the first 1000 miles.  Please feel free to message me direct if you get any hassle (probably dealing with or have dealt with similar problems!!!) 😏

Update.

I made an error, Toyota gave me what they called a “partial registration”, but it didn’t look like a proper registration number because all the letters were from the end of the alphabet including a Z, so I ignored it.  Anyway, today I gave my insurance company the registration number and they seem content with it.  I emailed Toyota this morning but haven’t heard back from them, neither from the dealer.

On a side note, the lady at NFU Mutual, who was really knowledgeable, said that the miles that you do in a year, can make a huge difference to the premium, and I could have saved a lot of money because since covid I have cut down drastically on my mileage.  I will be keeping my Corolla and she said  that I should think carefully about my mileage as with 2 cars I am unlikely to be doing 10,000 a year in both cars!

I am surprised that a buyer of a new car would hit problems with what must be a daily standard procedure.  I have bought two Volkswagens from new.  The first was one of several on the forecourt.  I chose which one, the salesman took down a number from the windscreen, and everything flowed smoothly for me to collect the car.

The second one had special features which meant a special order to Volkswagen for it to go on the production line.  I eventually got advice that the car was available, and advised my insurer of the details given to me. Again, a simple and smooth transaction.

I have always thought this to be the case regardless of manufacturer/dealership.
