Hypitched whine in EV mode - reversing or at low speeds

My 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD makes a horrible groaning sound while reversing, and is quite loud < 30 kPH in the EV mode. Talked with the dealer and tried reaching Toyota. They claim it is normal.

I am wondering whether other owners have the same issue. It is loud enough for the neighbours to complain.

I think this is totally unacceptable. Do other owners have the same issue ?

All electric motors of this type make some sort of noise but its difficult to say without hearing it.

I suspect that sound is the AVAS - Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System - which operates at low speed and is mandated for all cars that don't make an engine noise, so as to alert pedestrians to its presence.

There was a button to turn it off in older cars, but I think it's mandatory now so no more off button.
