advise on fitting T27 towbar please

Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice on fitting a tow bar to my T27, it's a 2016, 1.6 diesel saloon.

I've done various diy mechanics on previous cars in my younger years, although I haven't done anything for a few years now, but I feel confident enough to have a go at fitting this.

the towbar I've bought is a Brink Detachable Swan Neck Towbar

I've had a quick look under the car and there's bolts holes that line up, yay!

however I tried to screw one of the bolts in and all the holes are rusty as hell, I'm gonna try spraying some wd40 or similar and see if that sorts it.
what other options do people suggest?
rethreading the holes?

Also I plan on fitting a 13 pin electrics, the kit I've ordered comes with bypass relays etc.

it seems that I'm going to have to slice into the car's wiring, and it's not plug and play as I hoped it would be.

does anyone have a wiring diagram for my year & model?

many thanks

Whatever you do, avoid using Scotch Locks when you splice the wiring, they will be utter dog poo in 12 months and cause you problems. Try and get a specific model wiring kit, it will be far better, if you have to splice wires, use heat shrink to keep the moisture out

Well today I've managed to fit the towbar 😁

I had to clean the rust out of the bolt holes & rethread the holes with a tap, but once that was done the towbar bolted straight on, no issues at all.

even the small cut out for the bumper was simple enough.

but now for the dreaded electrics wiring 😱

I haven't checked any of the wiring loom in the car yet, so no idea of the condition, but I need to get hold of a wiring diagram😕, so I know what colour wires are which.

the 13 pin electrics kit I have is a universal one, so I'm going to be splicing wires, I plan to twist & solder wires together & use heat shrink, past experience with scotch locks has taught me to stay clear.

Any advice appreciated, I'm looking for help identifying wiring colours in my T27 Avensis

Today I've managed to have a look at the wiring in the boot of the car, I've not yet started cutting in to the wiring to join the towbar electrics as I want to be sure of what wire is which when matching up.

Here's what I have in the car

LH light cluster has four wires= 1.) white with black line 2.) blue, 3.) green 4.) thicker yellow wire

RH light cluster has four wires= 1.) white with black line 2.) blue, 3.) green 4.) thicker sky blue wire

I also need to run a permanent live 12v wire

I have spent a bit of time searching and I cannot find a wiring diagram for the tail lights.

does anyone have a wiring diagram for my year & model please? (T27 2016 reg)

Hi Unserioussam,

Your post is almost identical to what I am doing at the moment on the same vehicle, and I am running into the same challenges in finding the wiring diagrams. I also used to work on vehicles in the past, but only recently started servicing and looking after my own vehicles again.

I am going to mount the towbar this weekend, not too worried about this part. I am not looking forward to running a new wire from the Battery and spicing into these new Canbus wires! I am initially installing a 7-pin connector, but the bypass relay does support a 13-pin connector if I decide to add this later. I also have an adapter, although this, of course, won't support all the functionality of a 13-pin connector. I have read a lot of bad things about the scotch locks, so I will need to get some shrink wrap and dig out the old soldering iron!

I was wondering if you managed to complete the wiring yet and if you have any advice for me. I have been told that some Toyotas have a plug-and-play connector for the factory wiring on towbars. If this is the case, I may just see if I can get the Toyota wiring harness for the tow bar from Toyota.
