Aygo auto gearbox noise 18 plate

Hi! I have a lovely toyota aygo 18 plate, automatic, 25k on clock- recently I noticed clunking noise when gearbox goes up from 1-2-3 or down from 3-2-1, not sure if it was always like that (bought it 4 months ago) maybe never paid attention? Or maybe something bad is happening to the car? Car was serviced every years, etc- well looked after. Had a chat with a mechanic who claims that it might be because is a semi auto and is normal to hear clunking/ clunking noise when gear is changing. But need your opinion guys, as u all have toyota and u here for similar reason.

Thanks a lot!

Somebody else who did drive the automatic aygo II would confirm if I'm right. I think your mechanic had the same idea as me.

This is in fact a manual gearbox on which the shift changes are done by a robot or in a robotic way. It's not the same as a normal auto gearbox and not the same as a cvt.

Actuators... I am kind of comparing it with a robot making moves to stack boxes. You will hear a click or swish every move / turn the robot makes.

To be continued....

Is the gear oil ok thats the first thing to check on Comma website for your car its probably MVMTF plus 75W FS ( Has your mechanic already checked for low oil)

Hi there,

Found this post on the forum from 2018 which is very much along the same lines as the noises you're hearing. Would be worth you reading through the post as I think this is fairly normal for the MMT grearbox. They're not really automatic gearboxes at all but a manual box that's controlled electronically.

yeah its an automated manual gearbox really, they are clunky especially in the lower gears.

The wifes Aygo since new (2020) has made those horrible clunking noises so i take its normal. Its now on 15K and still the same. Its a hideous gearbox.

Main reason for choosing this one for toyota is probably because it is not expensive to develop and install. Extra cost compared to normal manual gearbox is small.

The cvt isn't perfect either and not kust for everybody. But also cheap to install.

  • 11 months later...

Beeping noise! Only when I drive it for the first 2 mins in the morning, then doesn't happen again during the day until next morning.

Had my clutch adjustment done 6 months ago, and confirmed everything is perfectly fine with the auto gearbox & clutch.

It's not a seat belt, lights, or handbrake, any ideas/ advice please?

Thanks x

Hi,

This sounds to me like a seat belt reminder after initial beep beep to remind you have not fastened your seat belt or passenger seatbelt.
Does your car has any of these reminders and did you placed any items on any of the seats , like a handbag on the passenger seat for example?
Also look in the middle console on your dashboard for any red flashing lights about seatbelt warning.

It sounds exactly the same way as seatbelt notification, but don't think is that as normally would flash up on the dash.  Is very odd, hate it so much. Happens only during the very first drive in the morning, then it's all okay.

look at the centre of the dash it shows both seats as occupied so something is on or under the passenger seat or something has pulled the wiring under the seat

a quick and simple test is to fasten the passenger seatbelt

I think the two warning lights up on the dash are for the rear seats. Passenger seat shows as a light in the speedo binnacle, and its not on.

Couple of years ago I was asked to check a 2018 C1 with the same issue. I only had 15 minutes to look at it but couldn't find anything wrong. After a couple of weeks of doing it, it apparently cured itself so I never got to the bottom of it.

Agreed. She's not put a bag or something on the rear seat?  If not, then fasten rear seat belts and see what it does.

Just to clarify- had only 1 mobile phone on the passenger seat during that video. However at some occasions there is nothing at all. Today I started the car and waited for all dash lights to go off (including on central dash), then drove off- no beeping sounds at all! Maybe that's all I needed to do? Not to rush after starting the engine,  just wait until all lights go off- then move, don't know. I'll keep you all posted. Thank you all for your helpful responses 👍 really appreciate it.

But when you start the engine, have you immediately engaged to D and drive off?
Which lights need to goes off?
Best practice when you start your car in the morning is to wait 30 seconds to a minute before driving off. No more, no less, but you have to wait these 30 seconds and then take it easy and avoid hard accelerations until you reach normal temperature or at least 5 min drive. 👍

Hi, pretty much yes- always done so really. Since yesterday I've changed my ways and I wait about a min, then once all lights are off the dash I wack it on D and go.

Basically when this red light is off I know I'm good to go, otherwise it will beep me to death ffs.

I think I'm starting to falling in love with my car again- thanks to all you!

This forum is great 👍 20240822_175922.thumb.jpg.f8de680cbe90d0eabcd0b7e086050446.jpg

From your video and your recent picture above the warning sound is for the rear seat belts.

If you don't have anything on the rear seats, coats etc then as previous poster has said fasten rear seat belts and see if it still does it.

Sometimes it can take up to 30 seconds for those lights to go out and that's why you get the warning sound

The good news is at least it isn't the gearbox and an expensive fix.

make sure your rear door and/or tailgate (boot) are properly shut simply opening and closing the rear door makes the car think you have rear passengers, and you can get the rear belt warning turned off if it bothers you

You can buy this obd 2 adapter with lifetime support to let you check and clear faults, run diagnostics or change preferences too.
I just bought one and works great. Just plug into the car and connect to your phone , download the app. Easy to use and understand.
