It’s getting time again…..

Just a polite reminder that last year we had a lot of owners complaining about blown windscreen washer fuses.  To avoid such disappointment the screenwash needs to be a good 50%.   You can buy it at most supermarkets and Aldi in particular do a good concentrate one.  The bottle holds about 5 litres so you really need to get 2.5 litres in there.  I run mine at 50% year round so never need to think about it but keep in mind that changing that fuse is a fiddle upside down under the passenger side so unless you’re closely related to a bat you won’t enjoy it and you WILL blow the fuse if it freezes.  It’s done like that to protect the motor despite the claims of “cheap fuses” 🙄

Thanks for the warning.

I always use winter screen wash all year round I think it does a better job.

If you have a B&M near you -

We now put Bitrex in our screenwash, to help protect your family. Officially the world's most bitter substance, just a tiny amount of Bitrex makes our products extremely unpalatable - and therefore safer - by helping prevent your children and pets from accidentally swallowing something they shouldn't

It’s going to be interesting for me as my last three cars ( ford) had heated screens, mines garaged overnight but in a car park at work, I may be using the remote heating a lot….

A timely warning and advice Don. I am always a bit skeptical about the temperature claims of screenwash concentrate. However, with a decent manufaturer, the 50% mix should be fine in our climate. Sometimes doesn't prevent the exposed jet(s) freezing at times but the reservoir and pump(s) should be fine.

A sample could always be placed in  a domestic freezer to check it's efficacy. -18C. Similarly with engine coolant.

Also bear in mind not switching on wipers frozen to the windscreen which could lead to an even bigger bill!

On the mk 4 the fuse is in the box under the bonnet almost as easy to change as it is to fill the washer bottle!

I know as i was one of those people 🥴

Haha, that must me another pet hate of yours for you to be getting it in this early!

Good advice tho', and you reminded me I needed to top mine up! (I've been getting through a surprisingly large amount of screenwash recently - Is it just me or has there been an uptick in insects splattering over the windscreen lately?? )

You’ve had a bit of warm weather off the continent down there I think.
