We’ve recently bought a 2020 Corolla. There is now reason to suspect the mileage isn’t true.
If we ignore mileage recorded at Mot and service history. As it’s too new for Mots to add up and not all servicing was dealer network.

Can you query it using an OBDII tool or is it specialist only?

I know say on Fords the power steering rack for some reason holds mileage. Any such tricks on Toyota’s?

Looks like it can be red with Veepeak BLE but I have not tried it but its shown under sensors.

Thanks I’ll look into that. I suspect it’ll just be the actual ODO reading but who knows.

The reading will be from computer in case the clock was replaced.

Carly is a other option for reading it.

I’ve dug out my bluetooth OBD tool and used Car Scanner, only the free version. ODO is readable and reflects the current shown mileage but in Km.

It’s being investigated by the showroom we bought it for as I’ve seen evidence that the ODO should be multiples of what the car currently shows. That even if it was a Km to mile recording error, it’s nowhere close.

I think it does get stored in more than one module, but you'd need something like Carly or Carista that can interrogate multiple modules and compare reported mileages.

Why do you think the mileage is incorrect out of curiosity?

Perhaps Toyota own diagnostic for best results. 👍

Why do you think it's clocked, it's more than likely ex fleet or a lease car, it's in KM as that is what the software you are using is configured for, check the software settings

what's the reading on the ODO and what's the reading from the ecu

Try Dr Prius

You can change KM to miles so have a look in its sub menue just scroll down thats one option;

Second option change it in settings under speed and distance.IMG_0708.thumb.PNG.ed75cefdd06858abfd06b0aaf1b49125.PNG

These cars that has DCM , do they not send information daily to servers, I thought it will be almost impossible to clock cars anymore. If you set up myT app, is there any way to check mileage from there?

Sorry just back on.

Car isn’t a miles vs Km.

The recorded Toyota history is radically different from the ODO on the car, even if I use a factor of 1.6. We’ve also found an online advert for the car, showing the ODO more than 4 times what the car shows now.

its young enough to be in warranty. Why would, even with display change, would it not have been replaced by Toyota and show on warranty/service history.

we are getting the car swapped out. All I can say is, in future I’ll be far more diligent on checking history in future.

On a side note, I’ve seen that exotic car buyers can get ODO tools that stop the clock. I dare say, similar tools will be available for less exotic motors. We all need to buy on condition, not on mileage. If both don’t seem to match up, walk away.

Concerning but it probably happens a fair bit. Just as well you found out.

Interesting to know what the dealer will do,will they go back to the seller or just accept it.

The simple explanation is the cluster was faulty

Wtf, this should not exist these times we live in. The car has 40 ecu with mileage recorded most likely on more than two ECU’s. Even if a device block the mileage on the dashboards the transmission, the engine ecu, the inverter they should have kept the information and send via DCM to Toyota server. Is it not how these cars works?
I had witnessed a man who had 2020 Mercedes’ s class tried similar device and he got himself into huge trouble with Mercedes’ uk refuses any help at all. The car was unable to drive as mileage discrepancy was detected between different ECU’s. This is what he was saying about back then, don’t know what happened ever since. Very strange and if true this about Toyota cars omg, just another weak point in the so modern electronics similar to rav4 thefts. 🫢

I agree that something like this shouldn't exist. This is why I was clear about me not using them on any of my cars.

Of course these things should not exist, but they do, there are very many products available to clock and steal cars, some have legitimate uses but adapted by criminal gangs, it shouldn't happen, but is does, you are naïve if you think otherwise

My question is how it is possible Toyota server not to receive the actual mileage?
I am not surprised  that devices like that exist.
Here I wonder of there are any similar that can alter the mileage of a Tesla ? As these are obviously the highest tech cars currently?

The Toyota server receives my mileage. It shows on the MyT app when I log in

There is always going to be someone who wants to hide the true mileage of a car. As you quite rightly say, you are naive to think otherwise

If it’s that simple, why was it not disclosed at point of sale? Why would it not show as replaced under warranty?

Also a more worrisome concern, is why in this day and age aren’t there further checks along the digital trail? When we registered the app to the phone, why didn’t the mileage request not flag an issue? What about the transfer to dealer, why is mileage recording still optional?

The car trade really needs to up its game. More and more are coming out with subscription models. The least they could be doing is protecting consumers with all digital finger printing our cars leave these days.

Any car, you need to run your own checks and not rely on a dealer, even main dealers get cars from auctions like Manheim or BAC

you don't state what the mileages were

I’ve been deliberately vague while we sort it out.

If the dash has been replaced it’s out by a minimum of about 30k miles and if it isn’t replaced. Then it’s out by a minimum of 22k.

which if you then factor in that in both cases it’s no longer got the balance of the 5yr from Toyota.

This is one of the reasons I think the MOT should start from year 1; Ironically the total opposite of what the gov wants to do (Extend it to the 4th or 5th year!! It's like they have no sense at all!!)

Having an officially recorded mileage from the get go instead of after the 3/4/5th year will help catch, or at least discourage this sort of fraud.
