I bought a four-pack of Apple AirTags (£99 Amazon) and some sticky-backed holders and have fitted them to the cars.

They will report where they are except the home address.  That being said, if someone walks past with bluetooth on their phone turned on, the app on my iPhone will update that the cars have been seen.

If I've left the car parked somewhere, it will remember where it is and send me a notification about 5 minutes after I've left it.  If it's nicked, hopefully I'll get a ping and details of where it is - the tags are well disguised, obviously I'm not going to say how or where. 😁

Interesting concept! Do the AirTags require batteries?

O/T: what are you flying?

It’s a good idea I’ve had one in my car since they first came out. They do have a Battery but it lasts a long time and will warn you when it needs replacing

They take a button cell (3032) and last over a year.  When low, you get a message on your iPhone.

The only problem is that if the tag is close to a phone that it is not paired to it will bleep to warn the person that they are being tracked. It’s a feature that has been introduced to prevent stalking.

"When the AirTag was first released, the tracker would emit a beeping noise if away from the owner for longer than three days. Apple has since shortened the time to 24 hours or less."

Hopefully if it's nicked, they will have it away and parked somewhere and leave it for a while to see if a tracker is fitted.  Once I get a notification of where it's parked, I can call the Old Bill  . . . .

Numerous videos on YouTube offer DIY instructions to disable the speaker........

Just the fact people are doing this might be deterrence enough, especially for more common cars, or vehicles of relatively low value.

It's long overdue that the balance of the equation was thrown heavily against the criminal. I'm strongly in favor of the "Castle Doctrine".

But this may affect their Human Rights (he says sarcastically) 😁

Airtags only require a connection to an iPhone ( not necesarily the one they are registered to) to report back to HQ their location so you get the response from FindMy or Notifications.

In the urban environment this is ok. Rural with your car dumped in a forest not so much.

Usually a car is dumped or left in a more populous location, would be handy if the tea-leaf owned an iPhone 🤣🤣

Probably, it's all free if they steal it.

Exactly. It's either stolen, or they've got the cash because they've stolen everything else they want
