20230901_234125.thumb.jpg.828f699863a5cdd82e3bfb3f2c9a5817.jpgThoughts welcome on the condition of the engine in my 2016 Auris 1.2t. Spent the last few days cleaning it up bit by bit and doing all the hoses and rubber with Autoglym vinyl & rubber care etc. In hindsight I wish I'd taken a before photo for comparison as was very dusty and dirty when I bought it going on 2 weeks ago.

Anyone got a recommendation on a product for cleaning up the metal on the intercooler?

Hi Jay,

Have you noticed any of the engine parts/hoses etc colour coded. Many of mine are and I was wondering if this is on all 1.2t models.

Hmmm.....can't say that I have. Most of the hoses and things like that in my engine are either black or grey. What colours do you have? Maybe it's different in an automatic? 🤔

Ahhh those markings. I thought you meant actual complete parts or hoses etc. I did notice some markings like this but just assumed it had been done while servicing and whatnot. I will have a better look when I'm at the car again and let you know if there are indeed more colours and markings than I originally noticed 👍🏻 Interesting.

Corrosion on bare metal parts is common for all Toyota cars all engines, it’s just the salt from winter driving. If you look at a car from Greece for exactly even at 10 years old it will be only covered in dust but not corrosion, while here in uk 3 years are enough to get most untreated parts corroded.
For engine wash best method is with water, either jet wash or with hose pressure water goes everywhere and removes everything. For the oily marks and in general you can use tfr traffic film remover or engine degreaser.

Hi Bob.....I had a good look around the engine and can confirm that yes, all hoses and fittings etc have colour coded marks on them. Blue, green, yellow, white etc.

Hi Jay,

I am not sure why they mark them. Funny I never noticed them before. Not that I have to look in the engine that much unless checking oil etc.

On a different subject.

I have never understood why the 1.2t was not a big seller in Europe as they really can shift when the turbo cuts in. The sports mode is also a delight have you tried it yet.? Hope you are enjoying yours.👍

I think its just for assembly purposes in factories and for quality control purposes also. Factories would have their own colours to signify different things etc.

Yeah the Auris always was a bit of an underdog I'd say that many people overlooked. Maybe it had something to do with it not quite being a model of its own but more like a branch off Corolla experiment that didn't quite work and when it didn't, Toyota just moved fully back to Corollas.

You're right it moves when the turbo hits alright and is great on motorways. A real nice cruiser. One criticism I'd have though is that in 1st and 2nd gear it's lacking that tiniest bit of torque until it gets to the 2500 rpm or so. (You having an automatic maybe don't notice this the same way I do) Maybe if they'd tried to push it to 120bhp or 130bhp as standard would have made the difference.

All in all though I'm really happy with it. It's feels really solid and comfortable and is great fun up in the higher gears. Love the looks too and the LED headlights and tail-lights are very nice.

Sport mode you say?? I don't have it unfortunately, wish I did 😪 Wasn't actually aware they had it. Maybe only the automatics in the 1.2t??

Auris and Corolla are exactly the same cars just a different names and in some markets the Auris has never existed but always been called Corolla.
The reason why 1.2t never went popular is only one., the hybrids that they offer.
You need to try a hybrid Toyota to fully understand and appreciate the beauty and the magic of the best auto transmission in the world of all times. The smoothness, the efficiency, the response and performance simply makes all other types of transmissions feels like from a century ago and the only cars that really can compete with Toyota hybrids are the electric cars, they are even better but lack range and convenience.
I personally like the 1.2t and I think it’s a really good alternative if manual a transmission is required. May not be as easy to drive or as efficient as the hybrid but it will be as fan for sure. I may also consider a 1.2 t petrol manual Auris or Corolla as alternative to the hybrid if I don’t drive as much as I do at the moment, or if hybrids are out of my budget. 👍

Hi Tony,

Well as you know I have a 1.2t auto and was just wondering why you would prefer a manual 1.2T and not the Auto in this model.

To be honest we did try a few different models before we purchased but as we had previously owned Lexus we didn't know how the Toyota would perform over time.

We did try the hybrids and liked them but was reluctant to spend the money on a car we had not had any previous experience with.

to be honest it is difficult once you have owned a lexus to find comparisons as the build quality and comfort are second to none in my opinion.

having said this we have been delighted with the Auris, yes it's not the same drive and comfort but as we are that much older and do not do as many miles as we used to it suits us really well.

I think it's a really understated model and I have not had or seen any major issues on the forum. We will be looking to buy another model probably a hybrid when we chop this in but it will be another Toyota.

I wouldn't mind having a Toyota and Lexus hybrid on the drive but lack of use and cleaning both cars would not be a great idea.😂

Hey Tony

Yeah I'm aware about the Auris and Corolla being more or less the same. In Australia for example they didn't even change the name to Auris. It just stayed Corolla. In other countries it was the Corolla iM.

I have driven Toyota hybrids. Also my Father had a lovely Corolla Touring Sports recently and just traded it in for a platinum model Camry with cream leather interior. She is some beast to drive in sports mode 😍

I agree there's something unique about the hybrid engines from Toyota. They sure like to scream at high speeds 😄 Really nice tech though tbf.

Maybe one day I'll look into a hybrid but I just love the fun of manual transmission driving 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree, and I am not saying that Auris / Corolla with 1.2 t cvt are bad , not at all, but the hybrid is simply better.
The 1.2t auto is perfectly fine for many people and especially those who needs an auto but they don’t drive much, 10k miles a year or below this is still a great car. The manual is my personal choice if it’s not hybrid because it will be more engaging to drive and more fun.
The hybrids on the other hand are the longest lasting, the smoothest cruisers, the most efficient and the easiest to maintain from the bunch.
For me personally there is no better choice than a Toyota or Lexus hybrid as I  drive a lot but if I don’t I can do with pretty much any car, any transmission or  engine. Your cars are great and if you look after them they will serve you well years to come. My poor Auris has reached 250000 miles and just now has started to show its age and mileage. First ever suspension components needs change and front wheel bearings again after only 110k miles.

Going back to another point here @Bper  Can you tell me more about this sport mode you mentioned and can anyone tell me which Auris models came with this feature?

Hi Jay,

Sport mode changes control parameters in transmission lockup and shifting, throttle response and Electronic Power Steering assist. The improved handling dynamics and lateral stability add to a sportier driving experience. This mode may reduce fuel efficiency.

I am not sure what models the sport mode came with but I assumed it was on the Icon, Icon Tech, Design and Excel. I also thought that sat nav would be available on the icon but it wasn't.😆

@Bper Yeah I wasn't aware sport mode was on these cars at all. Mine is an Auris Active. Has the Nav and other extras like front fog lights and heated seats but sadly no sport mode. I'd gladly trade you my Nav for it 😅

I think car models are country specific also. Same model in some countries has a totally different lay out when it comes to extras etc. than it does in another.

Hi Jay, When we brought our Icon I didn't give it much thought as to what extras the car had as it was the only Auris available at the time. However if I did have one complaint it would be the headlights. They are very poor for night driving and I think you get more light from a touch.😂

apart from that we really like it.👍

Hmmm....you have LED headlights? I actually think the headlights are great in mine..... But you aren't the first person I've heard say this actually 🤔

We don't do much night driving but when we do they are really poor.

Not sure what to do with them to be honest.Open to any ideas as long as it's not buy another car.😂

You can’t do much about it. It seems you have basic spec halogen bulb lights which are known for not been great. Only option is to buy some more powerful and different light temperature bulbs like osram night breaker plus corners Phillips extreme vision. You can check Amazon and see which ones you like.

Was this a problem across the Auris range or just on some models.

If, as you say, you could get more light from a torch, why not just buy a powerful torch, (or 2 - one each)? Much cheaper. 😁

Do you know though if you have LED or standard halogen? Just curious as to what may be the cause. Also trying some different bulbs as Tony suggested if they are halogen may improve things.
