Absolute agreement with Tommy and Danny

Yes, it can be noisy such as when we join on a slip road and have to get in ahead of a lorry.  If you find it noisy on normal driving you ain't doin'it right

Agree, no more noisy than my puma, unless you floor it, as for the controls..don’t put it in ev only mode if you have a cup of microwaved instant coffee with you..you’ll go back in time….

I’ve had my Yg excel nearly 3month and I have to say it’s the worst suspension I’ve ever encountered. Took back to dealers they said nothing wrong. My wife’s 10year old Picanto rides better.

I must ask if people went for more than a 5-minute test drive?

ANY engine will scream if you floor it! It has sweet FA to do with the transmission.

Same for ride comfort. It requires only an hour or two to decide if you're going to be happy.

Exactly, all these journalists that can’t think for themselves declare “the engine flares if you floor it”, so does a manual if you drop it down a gear or an automatic if you kick down to pass something.  So what!

I’ve got the AWD with multi link suspension and I’m really pleased with the ride.  I reckon it’s as good as you can get in such a short wheelbase vehicle.

What about tyre pressure on cold?
On small cars with basic suspension set up tyre set up pressures are crucial for a good ride. Without been in Yaris cross only watching those on motorways as others drive them I can see how their wheels are going up and down cushioning any road bumps and imperfections, which means exactly what Don says and this applies to fwd cars too.
My car has generally slightly harder suspension and when I watch similar on the motorway they jump like rally cars with wheels make very slight or almost no movement up and down. Also at night when most cars bouncing up and down and flashing their headlights my car remains generally flat and lights almost no travel up and down, good for the other road users. Yaris cross is on the bad side as often I get blinded by these cars., strong lights positioned high and soft suspension I guess. 👍

Double check tyre pressure on cold and you should have no issues, also check seat position and re adjust . Not ideally adjusted driver seat can cause back body fatigue and uncomfortable ride feeling. Lowering seat base reducing this event. I spent 12 + hrs every day in my car and got to learn something about seating , sleeping in a car.

I find the YC handles twisty roads very well so it might well have a stiffish suspension setup to lessen body roll, the Picanto will probably have a softer set up for city driving.

On the odd occasion that I’ve ventured onto motorways fuel consumption does suffer once you reach the 70mph limit so I’m wondering if it’s the best car for this type of driving

Not wishing to tell you something knew already, but ...

70mph is too fast for the hybrid system to show its best. Up to about 60mph the hybrid system will cycle through charging the traction Battery, the letting the car run in EV mode for up to a couple of miles in EV mode. If you go faster than the sweet spot, where you get the charging/Ev mode cycling regularly, the all you do is charge the transaction Battery to full, and it'll stay that way until the car slows to where it can use the stored electricity.

I used to run at 110 kph (68mp) with my ICE car, and I found I wasn't getting significantly better fuel consumption in my Yaris. Now I go 105kph, and it gave me a 10% boost in fuel economy. If it's only a short stretch then I'll keep it down to 100kph.

Flat sea level roads are best for hybrids, but they'll work well if it's gently up and down.

I rented a 3008 for a two week trip with lots of autoroute, I was surprised by the overall fuel economy, but defo not good as a city car.

I had one of those 3008s on holiday and while I was rather taken by the holographic dash, that’s where it ended.  The rest of it was junk and just typified French cars.  They claim to be good cooks too.  My left foot they are.  Very nice if you want to hang it on the wall but I’m always looking for the first chippy having been fleeced for a few squiggles.

I found with the lights set at the recommended setting they were too high.  I think I have them set 2 down which gives me an acceptable dip beam illumination.

Tyre wise mine are Goodyear and set to the correct pressures.  The ride is fine by me.

That is a bit surprising given the extra ground clearance of the Cross versions is supposed to let them be a bit softer, but one thing worth checking if you got it very recently is the tyre pressures - A lot of us were given cars with the tyres still at transport/storage pressures instead of the dealers deflating them to normal pressures during the PDI - I have a non-Cross Yaris and it was handed over to me with the tyres at about 60psi all round, and that was on 17" rims!

If you have a higher-spec one, it may have been fitted with 'sports suspension' which is a bit harder than whatever the normal suspension is, judging by the difference between the Icon courtesy car I had and my Excel. Check the brochure specs to be sure...

I have the pressures set at 2.2 bar front and 2.0 bar rear as stated by Toyota. We’re 3.2 and 3.0 when car was collected.

would be helpful for some comments from anyone who regularly drives at the maximum speed limit for extended periods

I drive regularly a ~67 mile trip that is around 50 miles on the M1 and 10 miles on the M62 give or take. I set my speed limiter to 72mph, but rarely do I get to stay at that speed as I normally travel through rush hour. The last trip I did which took me 67.4 miles of mostly motorway was a sunday however and I got 67.2mpg EV running time was 30% over 1h 54m, the return journey was 80.4 miles (A1 instead of M1) and that achieved 65mpg over 1h44m EV running 26% of the time so that was obviously a lot faster but the mpg difference is probably that 4% running time over the distance which could be down to the speed, could be down to elevation differences, but anything over 65mpg consistently I am more than happy with.

In not very scientific testing, at 70 MPH my car currently returns about 62 MPG. Still awesome, but not as good as it is capable of achieving.

I did have it go into EV mode at 82 MPH on a private road - higher than I thought it was capable of - but I had lifted off the throttle.

It's still low milage and tight, but I expect as she gains a few thousand miles, I'll see it drop into EV more often when cruising. Seems to be about 10 minutes before that starts on a relatively flat motorway at 60 MPH.

Darkness arrives later up here and only recently experienced the headlamps. I thought dip beam to be very good but full beam added little to the experience.

Within 20 minutes I had been flashed by oncoming traffic about 4 or 5 times. I dropped the lights from 0 to 1 and immediately there was more definition to dip beam and full beam did now add the improvement which had previously been lacking. Tyre pressures 2.2 bar front and 2.0 bar rear.

Have not had any issues with oncoming traffic since and Auto dip/high beam works very well (better than my RAV4 PHEV and about the same as my previous 4.4 Hybrid RAV4).

I find the LED headlamps superb for driving around my local area.  The roads twist, camber, create blind spots and have dips that can catch the unwary into a false sense of security.  My last car had good headlights but the Yaris Cross is so much better.  No problems so far with dip/high beam usage  and no angry flashing of the lights from oncoming vehicles.
