hi, i`m 73 and still love to rag it, throwing it about on moor roads and country lanes, i think the car is very responsive and handles great, don`t worry buy one and enjoy.

You still love to rag it ??? You are talking about a 1.8 with a cvt transmission aren't you 🤣🤣 I've actually been checking out some YouTube videos of 0-60 times and the cvt seems quite slow apparently, personally I don't do that but I do accelerate away sometimes fairly quick , I'm still on the look out for a 1.2t manual or a 1.8 cvt , every night I'm on the bloomin Autotrader 🤦🏻‍♂️

The new models are much more fun to drive - The TNGA platform has improved the handling massively over the previous gen of cars, and the newer drive trains, esp. the dynamic force branded engines that can switch between atkinson/miller and otto-cycle mode, feel much more responsive and powerful when you ask for some grunt.

It's been a long time since I've experienced such a big improvement over the previous generation model from any manufacturer! Up 'til now you'd generally only see small incremental improvements, and in some cases the new model has been worse than the old one! (Bigger, heavier but engine same power and worse handling and feel...!)

I still enjoy driving my Mk4 a lot!

When you say newer models I presume you mean 2019 onwards ?

Perhaps yes.
The older models 2010-2015 are also fun to drive but because they are old and require a specific service and care that many missed  on doing it, these cars may give you a false first impression that they are slow and sluggish.
Not at all. Even the gen 3 1.8 hybrids are slightly more powerful than gen4 1.8 hybrids and on motorways drives and under hard acceleration you may feel the difference, older ones can pull slightly quicker. If you are about performance more than actual fuel consumption your best choice is a Corolla 2.0 hybrid.
This is the fastest of the 3, 1.2 1.8 2.0 , and can be as efficient almost as 1.8 if you want to drive sensibly.
The latest 2023 1.8 are actually really good too.
You have to try hybrid at least 30 min test drive in various situations, or perhaps rent one for a week and see if you gonna like it. Some people can’t, but those who can they loved them and never want to change.
