Hi I hope someone can help I have purchased a rear wiper arm for my 2003 Yaris but am unable to attach it because the arm does not seem to fit on the existing spindal. I do believe I purchased the correct part as outlined in description that this arm is for the French built 99 - 2005 models. Please check attached photos

The hole through the metal sleeve appears to be blocked - is there some kind of bung in there  that has to be removed first, or is it just a trick of the camera?

The old spindle seems to have two sets of splines and a sheared shaft?

Hi Sajid,

Just come across your post.

Looking at the iamage you have taken of the existing rear wiper spindle it looks very rusty. Has the car been without a rear wiper arm for sometime?

It looks to me as though the the old wiper arm has broken (or been removed) leaving the old metal ferrule fixed onto the motor spindle. The wiper arm is plastic where it mounts onto the spindle and the metal ferrule you can see is there to reinforce the plastic.

Would think you need lots of WD40 applied on the old spindle, applied over a number of days, to try and free the old ferrule off the motor spindle and almost certainly get a proper tool that can pull the rusty ferrule off the wiper motor spindle. I know this as had to by one of these pullers last year to release the front wiper arm on my partners C1 last year.

This is what I got, cost around £10.00 :-

You might end up having to go to a freindly garage to get that ferrule removed though.

Also!

Just having a closer look at the new wiper arm, is there a hole through the shiny metal ferrule? It looks as though it's all black plastic inside the ferrule to my eyes. If thats the case either it's a plug that needs pushing out or the thing hasn't been manufactured properly.

Let us know how you get on Sajid

Even if I am able to remove the old ferrule thing there is a hole through the center of the wiper arm which is to wide for the other part without some sort of cog so it can turn properly

Hi  Sajid,

Can see you've put some WD40 on the old ferrule and shaft so that'll help things. You'll find when the old ferrule thing is off, the motor spindle, the wiper arm will go on over the top and sit properly on the spindle/shaft. Should have asked before this but does the spindle turn when the rear wiper is switched on?

You could try cutting through one side of the old ferrule with a hacksaw, be careful or you'll damage the paint work on the tail gate. Cut as close to the spindle as you can without touching the spindle if possible. The old ferrule is almost certain to be made of brass to help stop it corroding onto the wiper spindle, brass is much softer than steel so you should be ok if very careful. You'll likely find the ferrule becomes free on the spindle before you finish the cut.

When the ferrule is off the spindle you see that the spindle is tapered to accept the new ferrule in your wiper arm, that's why the new one looks to big at the moment!

Also I'm sure there should be a nut that goes on the spindle after the wiper arm is in place, that nut is what holds the arm tight onto the spindle as it's tightened down. Doesn't look like you have that nut from your images though.

Another thing you'll need to do this properly is the plastic cover that fits on the end of the wiper arm and stops the weather getting into and around the spindle nut that your going to need, it looks like your missing both.

Hi yes I do have the plastic cover thing but I've managed to break a piece on it so it won't go on and also I've got the nut not shown in photo I'll try to get the ferulle thing of I tuck my mate has a device to remove it and then I'll see what happens and update.

Sam0056,     My advice to you Sam, always take the old part with you when ever possible when

buying, or a photo . Cheers

Having the right nut is a bonus Sajid! You may be able to refit the old plastic cover even it it's broken. Once you've got the arm replaced and have it in the right postition to sweep the rear window as intended you're unlikely to ever need to touch the arm and cover again. I'd use one of the better black adhesive/sealers they do now, sure you can get to hold in place. The plastic covers are expensive for what they are, £10 ish on eBay.

Yes your right that's black cover thing is expensive at eBay but shockingly the main dealer sells it for £4 I think I should have bought the arm at main dealer too
