Avensis 1.8 vvti petrol mpg / fuel consumption

This is meant as a compliment for the avensis (petrol manual) fuel efficiency and hopefully some useful info for prospective purchasers of a car similar to mine (2017 1.8 petrol manual Business Edition tourer - owned since new now 70k miles on clock). Every car is different and so are drivers' driving style and the type of roads that are driven on etc so I know the following isn't easily transferable to others but still thought it may be useful.

The onboard mpg calculator has been checked against actual brim to brim fill ups on 20+ occasions and on my car has always proved amazingly accurate to within about +/- 0.3-0.5mpg.

Day to day running on winding rural roads during the winter 41-42 mpg.  Average journey length about 13 miles and 25-55mph.

Day to day running on winding rural roads during the summer 44-45 mpg.

Dual carriageway driving at 70mph (actual not speedo) gets about 45mpg unless poor weather.

Dual carriageway driving at 60-62mph (actual) gets 53+mpg.

We just got back from a trip up to and around Scotland. We drove 618 miles on the way there (Cambridge to far north) of mixed dual carriageway, single track roads and driving into/out of 4 cities I got 48.1mpg over the whole 618 miles (dual carriageway was at about 63mph (keeps ahead of lorries but doesn't require overtaking of them that often!), the city driving was mixed and controlled by other traffic).  The best leg was Perth to Inverness where I averaged 56.5mpg when sat at 53-60mph on the A9 (often stuck behind lorries which were limited to 50mph (ish!) due to average speed cameras).  The car was fully loaded for holidays but weather was warm and dry.

I know it's not hybrid levels of efficiency but the car is efficient for its size when driven steadily.  Main influences on MPG (as for all cars) is driving style, speed (62 vs 70 makes about a 15-20% difference), road surface and type/layout of road and weather.  Others will get higher and lower than this obviously but thought I'd jot this down as real world figures/experiences were hard to come by when we bought.

I think the hot weather adds a couple of mpg. I am on 42mpg urban driving. Though car tax was £245 when I bought it now it's £290 due to inflation though we got 6% pay rise, after a year of strikes nearly bringing the whole company down.

I think they forgot to lower the car tax when inflation went down?

Got something similar, but got CVT transmission on the same engine, 1.8L petrol.

On highway got between 40 and 47 MPG

In city between 33 and 26 MPG (completely depends on the traffic)

I can share my Avensis (1.8L gasoline, 2015) filling up data:

These 3 negative peaks are "not full tank" fillings.

Highest peak is ~February 2022 - we had cold (-15..20°C) days, same Detsember 2022 🙂

My usual trip to my country house =144km, average on this trip is usually ~5,8...6,1 L/100km (~20km urban, 80km highway (max 110km/h), and rest max 90 km/h).

That's good news.  Am planning to keep mine for a good while yet.  Comfortable, spacious, reliable and relatively efficient, just a bit boring but I'm happy to live with that!
