Cam needed after smashed window

Hi all,

So at 5:30 this morning I woke up to the sound of our alarm on our Auris Hybrid. We looked out of the window and there was somebody trying to smash the drivers side window. I ran downstairs and straight out of the door to see said person driving off.

Now I'm thinking we NEED a dash cam. We had one on our old Yaris which was great however in order to view the footage I had to be sitting in the car so the cam could connect to my phone, wouldn't be any use in the case of theft.

My question is, can anybody recommend a dash cam that records to the cloud, so that I can view the footage and live view from anywhere??

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear some lowlife damaged your car. Also if possible look into getting some CCTV install or doorbell camera etc.

If you are going to go down the route of a permantently powered camera with cloud upload you will need to consider a Battery backup option too. They are quite thirsty on power and will soon deplete your car Battery when parked. Blackvue do these - but they are quite pricy. There is a built in low voltage cut-off to prevent total car Battery discharge, however you never know when this is going to occur - and it's bound to be before someone tries to gain entry etc.

Yes, you need to think through the scenarios.   A Dashcam to cloud would certainly show where the car was driven.  However if someone just broken in to steal something that won't work.

We have two cameras covering the front door.

Regarding 'cloud' leading to a flat Battery, that should not be an issue when the car is powered up and taken.

Thanks for all the info. I have put a cctv camera up at the front of our house to keep an eye on it.

I did think that we should get a dash cam for everyday use when driving. I found a dash cam that doesn't have to be hardwired, it plugs into the cigarette lighter. It says it has a small Battery in the dash cam so even when parked it can start recording if an impact has happened.

Would it drain my auris hybrids Battery if left plugged in the cigarette lighter at all times??

Only in acc mode, otherwise it's off when not using the car. Ciggie lighter was what I used for my previous car, now hardwired to rear wiper fuse, so comes on in acc mode onward.

No, that is why it has its own Battery.

Using the lighter socket is not unusual, hard wiring is for those who don't want wires everywhere.
