Sounds like coolant - water pump?

is this expensive to fix?

Agree with Frostyballs... Check your water pump and coolant system, and if it really needs to be replaced, do it before it blows up while you're driving. Under normal working temperatures, all those cracks and fissures can result in catastrofic failure, overheating the engine.

As others have said, it will be a coolant leak, assuming the car doesn't have a hydraulic steering rack (very few do these days). Cost varies depending on the source of the leak, it could be anything from cheap fixes like a pressure cap or hose to very expensive ones like the cylinder head gasket or heater matrix. So it needs to be checked by a mechanic, but do check the coolant level and make sure it's above minimum before driving it any further. It's critical make sure you don't drive it without coolant in order to avoid incurring any further damage.

If you look at the underside of the water pump there is a weep hole that will start leaking if the bearing is failing, you should see some obvious pink or white dried deposits if its failing.

Don't forget the obvious like the hoses/clips and the radiator itself.

Do the old trick, place some newspaper or cardboard on the floor under whole engine bay, say overnight, then look for the stains which should guide you to the leak.

Lets hope its just a hose and not a radiator or water pump keep it toped up near the full mark as the last thing you want is a air lock in the system.
