is an Aygo a real Toyota, or something French ?

As you say there are always 2 sides to the coin with any model of car ownership, thinking back to our British Leyland Mini, my aunt had a 1275 GT and theirs was a great car, no rust etc., but ours few years later was terrible, but I late found out that some inferior cheapo steel used by BL was probably the cause.

But that experience with BL meant that we bought Fords for a few decades, which were much more reliable and rust free, so bit like jumbo not trusting the 'french' cars. A shame really cos when our Mini was behaving itself it was a great little fun car to drive, that's why I love our 107 so much it fun to drive but with way less aggro of ownership.

The thing is, the Aygo is supposed to be a super affordable reliable car, and it fills that brief perfectly - The bits that matter will last with just normal maintenance, but it's not a Lexus and it's going to have weird rattles and bits of trim cracking and rubbers not being as supple as they were etc. over time.

There seem to be a lot of people lately who want Lexus-levels of refinement for Dacia-levels of money but that just isn't realistic.

The question was about the origins of the Argo .. trying to see if it is the genuine Toyota experience… reliable, well made and straightforward to maintain… exactly as my previous Toyota and Lexus history…

the information on this thread has been quite  revealing… not worried about plastic creaks, as I said you get the same with Lexus, the same with any brand… what you don’t want is mechanical faults… given frequent fluid changes,  engines, gearboxes and other key components should be dependable, that is what I wanted to discover.

seems like some mixed responses, with a general steer to aim for the most recent variant to fit the budget

The core of the Aygo, e.g. the drive train, is pretty bullet-proof; Being a budget car they tend to get a lot of abuse but that Daihatsu-derived 3-pot has proven to be very strong.

The electrics generally stand up well, but can develop random problems as they age depending on how the car's been used and looked after.

I think the most common issues I see reported with the Aygos are due to their leakiness, and there have been lots of attempts to solve that, e.g. replacing the weather striping, sealing the rear lights, boot etc..

You're right tho' - The newer one you can get, the less jank you'll need to deal with, with the newest Aygox being the most 'Toyotary' one yet
