Rear pads worn, front okay?

Hey got a quick Q,

Is it normal for rear brake pads to wear faster than front ones? I thought I've heard this before that usually front wear x2 before you change rear ones?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think my rear ones are entirely gone(changed tires so I could see they're thin or non existent lol, mechanic confirmed), whereas front ones look quite THICC. Got photos, maybe I'm wrong?

I think you maybe looking at the chamfer of the brake pad  they look OK to me .

Both pads are chamfered at the edges and it may look thinner near the steel brake pad backing plate.

Yea and perhaps the angle as well. Still trying to figure out what's the scraping noise I get at low speeds because pads seemed okay

Could be a bit of grit stuck in caliper housing, pads sticking or backing plate catching. 🤔

Sounds like they need removing fully and back on properly which is something I don't know how to do myself unfortunately or have the tools, perhaps at next major service they'll hopefully be kind enough to do that, fingers crossed

From the pictures, there seems to be plenty meat on the pads.  If you are getting a scraping noise, you should take them out, inspect everything, clean everything up and, put it all back together.

Perfectly normal for a hybrid. When you brake:

1. First the car uses regen.

2. Further pressure applies the back brakes. Front is being retarded by regen and it helps to keep the back wheels behind the fronts.

3. Further pressure now applies the front brakes.

If you tend to brake gently, the front brakes may be rarely used.

Most modern cars post 2000’s has abs + bas and particularly Toyota hybrids has in addition an electric brake by wire brake system, a rear second loop that has no direct connection to the brake pedal, all controlled by the brake ecu . Brake pedal only control front brakes directly with the increase of pedal travel.
Rear brake pads does wear quickly and usually they are most common first parts that needs replacement on Toyota hybrids, roughly around 50k miles, could be a lot more but depends how and where you drive.
Electronic parking brake does not increase wear , however the traction control, the stability control and the abs+ bas does wear the rear pads faster than front.
In the op case the pads look like they have plenty of life but there is a corrosion forming on and dirt. Just the right time for brake cleaning service. Same as Derek w has done recently on his Yaris.
Do this every year or two and your brakes will last ages. 70k + rear and 100k + front.

Makes sense then, thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Most of the wear and tear is done by previous owner, I do mostly gently brake as I anticipate traffic so it makes sense based on your description to wear rear more and have plenty left on front brakes.

I do also think I need a brake cleaning service, but I'm not sure if that's a thing here in the UK? Does it come with the major service from Toyota dealership perhaps? I can't do it myself unless I decide to buy loads of tools and learn DYI 🙂

Rear brakes sticking sufficent meat on the rears for another year then I check again no problem with the front its just a job I prefer to do now rather than Febuary in our climate.

I also seen them pass the service/MOT then I ended up pulling them apart myself when the weather is not so kind even if you are working in a garage with the door open & snow on the ground its not ideal weather for working on cars.
