It hasn't actually been announced yet, just rumoured/expected. Trust The Sun at your peril 😄

No announcement as yet.

Extract from The Sun: "He is expected to kick back the ban on the sale of new fuel-powered cars from 2030 to 2035, just weeks after saying he would not budge."

Moved to General Discussions.

No doubt as the general election looms nearer we will see more relaxation of hard line policies. If re-elected they will be back on the table again with unrealistic targets and increased burden on us.😴

So assuming that the Petrol & Diesel ban is moved from 2030 to 2035, would it be likely that the Hybrid ban would also move from its proposed 2035 ban to maybe 2040 ?

This will play out in the same way that we (and manufacturers) were told FM radio would be decommissioned and turned off in the early 2000's due to the introduction of DAB... wait a minute though... FM is still around nearly quarter of a century later.

The result was manufacturers saw no point in developing new products and consumers were left confused not knowing what to invest in. Sound familiar.

See Ford are moaning about the probable 'u-turn'.

 Extract from BBC News:

"Lisa Brankin, Ford UK chair, said the 2030 target "is a vital catalyst to accelerate Ford into a cleaner future", adding the company had already invested £430m in upgrading its UK plants to produce electric cars."

Strange really as the last Ford vehicle assembled in the UK was the Transit, and UK production ended in 2013 ..... and the only plants Ford now has in the UK produce engines and transmissions.

Ford is also partnering with VW on commercial vehicles, using VW's electric platform, and re-badging passenger vehicles (eg Ford Tourneo Connect being a re-badged VW Caddy).

From BBC News, summary of Sunak's announcement:

Summary
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pushed back the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK from 2030 to 2035
Sunak says he still expects that by 2030 "the vast majority" of cars will be electric, because of improving technology
He also says there will be "far more time" to transition from gas boilers to heat pumps
And there is a new exemption for people in the poorest households, "so they never have to switch at all"
He says he remains committed to net zero by 2050, but wants to "bring people with us"
The aim of net zero is for the UK to take out of the atmosphere as many greenhouse gas emissions as it puts in

My view is the same as lee on YouTube, the futures not electric as the infrastructure not even close in many parts of the country and the 50% loss in value at 2 years old. On the top brands that can be just over 1 year like in his case The Taycan Sport Turismo models.

I'm sure Toyota will be happy; The thing manufacturers hate is when you set a long term goal then suddenly change it.

A lot of people have forgotten the original cutoff date was 2040, which all manufacturers agreed on, but then this was unilaterally brought to 2030 some time later, which royally screwed Toyota's long term planning.

Their plan was to hybridize their entire fleet and use the proceeds from that to plough R&D money into the last key bits of tech that would make EVs not suck - The solid state Battery is one of the big ones, the other being hydrogen, as well as some other lessor potentials they thought worth exploring like induction, flywheels, compressed air etc..

The change to 2030 messed up that timeline and is why they've been digging their heels in with the transition to EV, as they know the tech is not ready, and they're having to accelerate their timetable which will make the end product worse as a lot of what will get cut is likely long term testing prior to market deployment.

I personally like the idea of an EV - They are really fun to drive; The single thing that makes them suck is the gigantic anchor (i.e. the battery) they have to lug around. If they can just make it suck less, or even think up an alternative (Mr Fusion? Dilithium reactor? Dark matter fuel cell??) then we'll be set...!

Trouble is the govt is still sticking to ev or nothing rather than letting the r&d departments come up with innovative solutions for zero emissions.

Well they don't need to be EVs per-se; As long as it doesn't produce CO2, any alternative power system (Like a nuclear reactor!) would be allowed under the stated terms, as long as it didn't fall foul of some other law or regulation (Drat!)

Vehicles running on compressed air or flywheels would work for instance, if those didn't have even worse range

If they pull their fingers out and make fuel from atmospheric CO2 an industry, that might open the door for hydrocarbon engines again, since the goal is NET zero.

I'd prefer it if society regained its sanity and realized all this "net zero" and MMCC nonsense is exactly that - nonsense.

I'm all for less POLLUTION, but that isn't the same as saying using oil, releasing CO2, or existing as a human being, are only negative for the planet in such a way we're all going to die 50 years from now.

The claim that "CO2 = bad" isn't supported by any actual process that can be demonstrated.

Remember the claims in the '80s that CFCs caused the hole in the ozone layer? Not only is that complete BS, but the concentrations of CFCs today are the same as 40 years ago, but the hole mysteriously closed up anyway! So much for that. The icing on the cake was when they discovered the second hole in the ozone layer over South America/South Atlantic recently, that they had no idea about. It shows how much rubbish they really spew on these topics.

When the German emissions-scandal broke, how was it discovered? When someone used a German car for an unrelated experiment and discovered by accident that the emissions were astronomically higher than they should be. All the claims that certain gases and particulates had been reduced were not at all based on reality, but on computer models fed by data from the automakers that simply said "we reduced emissions". Now they are actually checking air quality, they've discovered the situation isn't at all what their models were predicting. That is NOT science at all!! Models are total BS, and are merely guides, but here are the stupid Governments of the world using it as the absolute and only source of truth.

The other great myth of the modern scientific era, is thinking oil and gas come from dead dinosaurs. It doesn't. The process is the same as that used to form diamonds - high pressures/temperatures in the Earth's crust. Titan, a moon of Saturn, has hydrocarbon lakes. Last I looked, there weren't any dinosaurs there.

The whole thing is an absolute con to control the people and destroy modern society.

The UK emits less than 1% of total CO2 output, yet we are expected to make the deepest cuts. Why? Because we are viewed as one of the most prosperous countries on the planet. It has nothing to do with survival, and everything to do with power and control. It's time we told these eco-loonies where to go (and the dictators that support them).
