The IQ - how popular are they becoming ??

Recommended Posts

I have an orange colour IQ 1 2012, 1.0, manual - when looking for a lower mileage alternative they seem to be very expensive.

What's going on with the IQ marketplace? Is there a growing demand for them?

What are the very popular IQ's, is there a sought after trim, colour or additional option - etc?

Thanks for enlightening me.

Here on the other side of the sea same kind of thing.. prices of IQ are rising. Especially the CVT.

Well I just wondered.

Also I would expect the orange colour to be popular - only available on the mk2 version of the IQ's (height adjustable seat and better rear seat-belt stay)

I didn't expect CVTs to be that popular - I prefer a manual gearbox personally.

I think the IQs are becoming popular, as a bit of an unsung hero.

Good car, good equipment, good mpg etc.

Nice to drive.

And they look different!

Not just another SUV.

Do you prefer the 1.0 or 1.33 size engine? One is more powerful but is it as smooth for example?

The 1.33 is a very smooth engine, but I trust the reliability of the 1.0 more.

I am noticing that IQ's with low mileage - gen 2 - in good condition are generally selling OK for about £5k.

Add more money if IQ2 and leather seats.

I am on the lookout for the right one when it comes up (this will then be my 3rd IQ in a row - it's just a good runaround car).

Secondhand car prices have risen in the UK. My other car was worth £17k and now it's £20k. 4 years ago my motorhome cost £37k and now they're being advertised for £45-50k. Crazy!

That said, you can still pick up a bargain - as I did recently with the IQ.

However, the IQ prices vary wildly - in general low mileage cars are very pricey.

Are they popular? To me, they're the best-looking little city car, by far - and I'm not alone in thinking this. In this age of frugality, it's natural that they will become more & more sought after.

If you don't mind divulging - what was your "bargain" price on what IQ and spec? I'm interested to know because of my own hunt for a bargain.

I also like those quirky looking BMW i3's btw.

Don't mind at all. Having looked at several 1.0L petrol IQ's that were terrible, I got a one-owner '59 plate car (lady), full main dealer service history, 70k miles, good condition, aircon works, for just under £3k. In my area, just north of London, that's a bargain. Most are at least £1k more than that. It's got the push button start and all the 'automatic this's and thats'. There are bargains out there - and there are also rip-off merchants - I met a few of them.

It isn't just the IQ which has increased in price - used car prices increased by just over 31% in 2022 compared to 2021 (source Car Dealer magazine), and currently they around 2.7% higher than 2022.

Part of this is down to the waiting lists for new cars (due to parts shortages, Covid, Ukraine, etc) increasing demand for used. Some car buyers who aren't content to wait for new cars, go for used instead. Increased demand raises prices.

I know that cars as a whole have gone up significantly in price - I just wondered if the IQ in particular due to its styling and unique (somewhat Marmite) appeal is appreciating greater than most?

Interesting thanks. Just so some of you may be aware - I am thinking of selling my 62 plate IQ in Toyota Metallic Orange (the colour only available to the mk2 version) for no less than £3k. The Mk2 version had the adjustable drivers seat height which is a BIG advantage over the Mk1, and the rear seat-belt stays that actually worked - rather than the slots offered by the Mk1 version.

Mileage is 87,000 - full Toyota Service history - One owner (just me).

Caveat and hence why the low price - I scraped the bottom sill of the car quite badly while taking a turn too sharply near a low lying wall which I didn't see - I was furious at the time because that mistake was mine! I am a careful owner, but mistakes are mistakes.

I  had the damage patched in by professionals - but not a full respray which would have put it back to perfect.

I also filled the car with high quality fuel on every fill-up (which on reflection was a bit OTT).

So in fact you have now a IQ2 in nice metallic colour, 1 owner, full history, dealer serviced, well cared but only need some paint? Think it will be hard to find a better one.

You either are selling or you're not - if you are selling the post will be moved to the For Sale section. Which is it?

Ah sorry I'm new to this forum - the selling of my IQ was a passing comment which I am considering, and have not set in stone. Apologies for not knowing there was a separate For Sale section.

it's not an IQ2, it's an IQ second edition where they made very useful improvements on the drivers seat and seat-belt stays. I think the mk2 came into play from 2012 - I was impressed they got rid of those annoying two niggles.

And no the scraping was bad (but only on the bottom sill) - some of the sill will need pulling out where it got pushed in by the wall - and then a proper respray done around that area. At the time Toyota quoted me £1000, and another company £600. So that's more specific - sorry if that was vague.
