You bought the right one. No worry.

The white box that comes with the downlight makes the LED suitable for 12v DC. Without controller the LED will burn.

Maybe it's a security feature? If someone nicks your keys and walks up & down the multi-story car park to see which car lights up, they'll never know it's yours because they won't see it.

The LED arrived today. I took the dome light completely to pieces (lots of plastic clips and none of them broke!). The new LED (just like your picture, above) fitted nicely and I secured it with a drop of supeglue on the tips of each of the metal clips. Soldered the wiring onto the original connector and... B I N G O ! It works!

It's not dark yet, so I don't know if it's any brighter than the original. If it is brighter, I'll do a step-by-step guide in a new thread.

ps - the black rim looks quite nice. It makes the light look less cheap & plasticky.

Good to read and see it works! 

On the German forum there is a picture of the little PCB board where they made a shortcut with a white wire.. i dont know exact what that is about but i soldered that wire too.

I didn't do that. I just used the + and - wires. It works perfectly - fades on and off, lights up when I approach the car, has all 3 functions. It's just like the old light, but brighter. Now that it's dark I can see that it's not too bright - it's just what a courtesy light should be.

Hi, he is using a 12v g4 led,the soldered wire enables you to use the same driver without the converter as far as I can see from the pics

You see, to me, this is all witchcraft. I have no idea how you'd understand that! Electonics are not my strong point. But thanks for the explanation.
