Mk4 Yaris is my most hated car ever. I loathe the thing.

I'm sorry you're going to through this, maybe just unlucky? I've got no rattle at the moment, hopefully It'll stay this way for a while.

I had a Nissan that was recalled for a passenger airbag replacement, it had no rattles. I refused to let some tyro dismantle the dash and re-fit it with numerous bits missing and besides, I never sat in the passenger seat.

Selfish, or what?

No, I’ve rejected work being done on the same grounds in the past.  I’m more than capable of pulling my own car to bits so as long as it wouldn’t cost me a fortune I’ll forgo a job.  If I do it and I break something I can’t blame anyone else, nor can I wonder what else is hidden.

I think if I were you I would sell and go elsewhere.

You could solve all its niggles but you still won't like it.

I have downloaded loads of pictures of Yaris parts on eBay so I know where all clips are and how not to break stuff.

This weekend I intend to remove the A pillar trims, lower the front heading. Sort out the roof wiring by wrapping it in a tube of soft material..

Remove the hard dashboard top. Line the ends with felt where the pillar trims locate. Cover the underside with noise damping stuff. Use silicone grease on all fasteners and clips when reassembling.

Then start on the boot lining. Probably a similar traetment. Loads of adhesive noise damping material.

Pray

Good luck.  Hope it’ll be a successful venture.

My only rattle left in mine after foam stuffing in the speaker grills, pillars and gear changer (high pitched squeak). Is when I play certain bassy tracks (incubus or Tool) the left door sounds like a packet of tic-tacs.

Advice on that would be appreciated. I did felt tape a lot of the plastic on plastic parts but it must be deeper in there.

@Unklian - Have you spoken to the dealer who sold you the car? As I mentioned earlier, my Dealer sorted out a rattle in my first C-HR. I bought it, as a used vehicle, when it was 18 months old and well outside the Toyota 6 month warranty period. I had owned it for about three months when the rattle started and the fixed it free of charge.

If the Dealer do come to the party and address the issues, great. If not, then as you say, it's going to be "Tools, foam and more felt this weekend".

I do hope you get it sorted. There is nothing worse than driving a car you don't enjoy.

He indicated the dealer weren't interested - Something about rattles not being covered after 6 months?

Well, I guess we're all different but I am shocked that such things as you describe have clouded your overall enjoyment of the car. Such things would be, for me anyway, minor irritations but for you, it undermines your opinion of the whole car and that's sad when it should be an enjoyable relationship.

Rattles can be very annoying so I can imagine with that many it would ruin the experience of the car. It'd be like living next to someone who was always drilling into the walls!

The one rattle I had irked me a lot and that only happened occasionally when certain songs were playing!

If it hadn't sorted itself out, I would have eventually been driven to go full-anchorman on the door to try and fix it

Bought it from a dealer 60 miles away......It was the car we wanted.

(Wife likes white......I wanted the smaller alloys because kerbs).

Local dealers hadn't one in stock that didn't have marks / scuffs. I'm a bit pedantic about having a clean, shiny car.

Trim rattles aren't covered and I'm from an engineering / hands-on background.

I'm sure I'll sort it but I probably just need to vent.

The advice and pictures I've been sent have been useful.

As somebody mentioned, I can always sell it and try something else. It has however soured my opinion of Toyota as a brand.

Just like you, I am pedantic about having a clean shiny car. Although the dealer is 60 miles away, it may still be worth speaking with them. The worst they can say is No. You may ne lucky and they ask you to bring the car in for them to sort everything out. You'll never know until you ask.

I've done sound proofing on my rav with dodomat:

There were lots of videos on how to get trim off, and yes, it can feel like you are going to break stuff but you can do it if you are firm but gentle.  I do find Toyota design to be simple and logical and it wasn't technically difficult to get the trim off.

I would recommend getting a bag of spare clips off eBay though, sometimes they do break.

My comment was more that I know what it's like to fall out of love with a car, and even if you get it all sorted will you ever be happy with it?

Hold on, you are running a major risk here. When you are done with all this work and have fixed most of the niggles, you could end up with a car that is no longer your most hated, but your most loved car. That is truly scary stuff. Especially when served with a decent portion of humble crumble pie. Think about it. You have been warned!

Seriously, all respect to you for your perseverance.

Our mk3 Yaris rattled horrendously - was as reliable as rainfall in Manchester though. You pay for the mechanical bits in a Toyota, not for foam lined interior parts. That’s the market Lexus have. . The LBZ is coming soon and is an upmarket Yaris

I solved a rattle in the door, when playing bass heavy music by securing a cable going to the door lock! The tape is original but got loose over time, so I added hot glue.

I had a “Friday car” last year. Got rid of it in the end as it annoyed the hell out of me.

Bear in mind, these cars are made in France, where Renaults and Citroens also originate from. In saying that, Toyota’s are Toyota’s, therefore, good design and elimination of Squeaks and rattles should be a given.

I’ve worked in Japan for Toyota on new model D & D. Their emphasis is on efficiency of producing the cars and really only focus on the issues mentioned when reported.

On the flip side, I’ve also had the same job for Jaguar, who are obsessed with elimination of Squeak's and Rattle's. Their emphasis on efficiency is nowhere near that of Toyota.

So, I don’t think any manufacturer is fully focused on every aspect of Manufacturing cars perfectly. There will also be some variation in manufacture of parts and processes - both at suppliers and build plant.
They do try, but all cars now are 3D modelled, so there is almost no dynamic assessments of variation in harnesses, trims etc. Only clearance checks.

It is key your issues are fed back though; to allow fixes to be implemented - where a high level of customers are dissatisfied.

Toyota are expert at making every car the same.  They usually only rattle if they’ve been interfered with so for instance, have a Dashcam or other accessory fitted.  I’ve put the front Dashcam in the Lexus today and every panel I took off had extra sound deadening and tiny felt pads on every contact point.  There’s a price for that although I guess it’s there for a reason.

Yes, Lexus go the extra ( as do many luxury car Manufacturers) to eliminate issues before they get out. Volume car models tend to fix on the run or as and when there’s enough complaints.

Also agree with removal of trims etc. If a car is pulled apart at plant or within dealer to fit accessories or fix an issue, those parts never tend to fit as snuggly as initial fit. This is why Toyota and Lexus strive for 100% Right First Time.

That's the thing that annoy me about some posts on here - They whinge about the build quality, but then they don't want to pay for it when we tell them to look at a Lexus. You can't have it both ways.

Like, I always say if the build quality matters more than reliability, then get a german car - They will fit the bill perfectly. There are not many manufacturers who can beat the feel of german cars.

Ooh! How much of the door did you take off to get to that? Whole panel?

Yes, you need to remove the whole panel to have access.

But German car quality is overrated.  Nice when new but a liability with any age and mileage on them.

When I moved from Audi/VW dealership to Nissan, I instantly recognised that the German quality thing was in the past by comparison (this was over 30 years ago).

Now with Nissan having French relations - maybe not so much 😒

I think we're talking about different things; I'm talking about stuff like the noise suppression, ride quality, material feel and quality, general fit and finish of everything, seat comfort and material, the feel and sound the doors make when they shut, that sort of thing.

German cars are just generally nicer places to be in than equivalent jappy cars.

Which is handy for when their owners are stuck by the side of the road waiting for recovery... :P

Every time I sit in the thing I hate it. First car I've ever had that angers me so much.

If you feel that badly just sell it and move on, as by sounds of it you will never be happy with it now.

I feel your pain, and I’ve been in your position before, life is far too short to be angry over a car, just be rid of it.
