Mk4 Yaris is my most hated car ever. I loathe the thing.

I think we're talking about different things; I'm talking about stuff like the noise suppression, ride quality, material feel and quality, general fit and finish of everything, seat comfort and material, the feel and sound the doors make when they shut, that sort of thing.

German cars are just generally nicer places to be in than equivalent jappy cars.

Which is handy for when their owners are stuck by the side of the road waiting for recovery... 😛

Yep.  My c class was lovely to drive, quiet and wafty.  Complete money pit though.

Bit of an update......

Felt tube made and wrapped round wiring loom in headliner. Cured!

Still rattling from nearside somewhere.

Eventually traced to two places...... The panel at the end of the dashboard which has the airbag switch.

Solved with a thin, black foam piece between the front edge and the doorseal.

The front edge of the interior door trim has a hard edge which rattled on the painted part of the door. Slid in some tiny felt pieces...... Cured!

The only noise now seems to come from the hard plastic front dashboard piece. I believe it is where the screen vent and emergency speaker are fitted.

To be sorted next weekend when I have access to a wider range of tools and trim removal tools.

In the meantime, took time to scroll through some car info.

The long term (since we've owned the car and done 2000 miles) fuel consumption is 82.3mpg. Very happy with that.

I might actually get to like this Yaris?

Thanks again all for suggestions / diagrams etc.

Not much to add except that Mrs Slightlylessold has a 2022 Yaris Excel and it's the only car she has ever had that she says she loves.

It's unfortunate the OP has so much rattling issues, looks like resolving a lot of them now. Hopefully will then be able to enjoy it.

Mine is a design 2023, had it for near 4 months. No rattle problem. When adding all the important factors of a car together, I would say the MK4 Yaris is the best small car in the world.

My Good Lady says the same thing about her Yaris Excel

Mine is now a bit quieter.

I do admire its efficiency. Glad I bought poverty spec. with the narrow(er) tyres.
Have also spent far too much time fitting front mudflaps.

Looks better now and keeps much cleaner.

I may come to actually like it.

Arguably the best compromise in small cars on the market today. I bought a design spec model, and compared to my previous 2016 Peugeot 208, it's a drop in trim level and the seats are less comfortable.

I sat in a Corolla a few weeks back, and straight away I felt the seats were more comfortable. The seats are the only issue I have with my Yaris. The rest, handling, fuel economy, acceleration when necessary, etc is perfectly adequate for everyday driving. I have had no major issues with rattles, either.

I ditched the original tyres at delivery, bought Goodyear Vector 4seasons-3rd gen. They have 27k kms on them, they're good for at least another year. Round here, I have to have 3 peak M&S tyres in the winter.

Some other brands interior are nicer than the Yaris for sure, though most are not hybrid. Like other members, I'd rather Toyota spending the money on the important parts - powertrain/built components and reliability than interior or looks. As well I think the MK4 looks great, don't think there are many small cars that looks better styling wise.

With regards to the seats, I don't know if it's my old age or it's just a coincidence; since owning the new car, my lower back has stiffen up a lot. There is a gap in the lumbar for me. I was assured by young man cyker that it's not my old age, he had the back problem since he got the car. So recently purchased this support, feels good. Need to use it longer to see if the back issue gets better. Screenshot_2023-10-23-19-54-30-622_com.alibaba.aliexpresshd.thumb.jpg.ae6f05901bfb51f3c06ee9a42d5ff51c.jpg

I have a Corolla. Yesterday my daughter took me out in her Yaris Cross Design, I was a back seat passenger.  The seat was noticeably firmer than I am used to and after a 25 mile trip I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but the seats in my Corolla are definitely nicer to sit on.

One thing I did notice was that the interior of her car was very black. Black seats, black dash, black door linings, black roof lining, a bit oppressive really.   Maybe the fact that it was a dull day didn't help.  I was thinking of getting a YC Excel next year when the facelifted model is available but not so sure now.

Indeed, the all black interior of the "premium" models was a reason I went with the design spec. When I tested the YC, it was the fully loaded version with the bigger wheels, lower profile tyres. The Design spec had more compliant tyres, but we didn't drive that. As you can see we bought the Yaris HB, because it was a smoother ride, even with the 17" rims at the time, than the YC. Much as I wanted the HUD, the rims were a more important consideration.

I, too, use a lumbar support in the car at all times, it also leaves an air space, so not so hot in summer. It's a worthwhile accessory for the Yaris, but I definitely would have preferred better seats (an heated ones at that!) with the spec level.

I'm lucky in a way because I've only owned Yarisususesiees (Aside from my first car, which was a Fiesta) so I'm used to having cheap functional no-frills interiors

The most comfy car I've ever been in is still a colleague's VW Passat, which had some sort of plushy material for the seats; It was like sitting on a pile of children's soft toys or a very comfy sofa  I've still never come across another car with seats like that (Probably because they'd be a nightmare to clean!!)

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the lumbar support Mojo - I've been trying a few (Thankfully a lot of sellers let you return them!). I've been finding my rolled up towel still gives the best initial support, but only for short journeys, as it gets squashed after a while. I am currently trialling a memory-foam butterfly-ish thing, which is the current favourite, but it starts off quite firm and takes a bit to conform to my back so initially it's quite uncomfortable, but gets better the longer I'm in the car!

I have to say the stupid 'sports' bolstering is making it more awkward as the bolsters are just in the way, making it awkward to seat the lumber cushions properly.

Why anyone at Toyota thought Sports-anything should be anywhere near an eco-box hybird I'll never understand! :confused1:

Apparently, trim rattles aren't included in Toyota's warranty after the vehicle is 6 months old.

Not 6 months, the limit for warranty claims where no manufacturing defect or defective part can be found e.g faults such as rattles that require, refitting, packing, lubricating, adjusting etc is 18 Months/20000 miles

Car is now ...... 20 months old. So...... too late. Surely in 2023 with all the incredible technology under the bonnet, all the airbags and safety systems etc. Two pieces of plastic rattling / rubbing together is a simple problem?

Stereo is left on permanently.

Its my most economical car ever for two reasons.

1) All the technology.

2) It is only driven when absolutely necessary. No pleasure trips ever.

Yaris is a cheap car as is Aygo and all brands small cheap cars aren’t as plush as their bigger sisters.
I like to seat in all showroom models when visiting dealers for parts collection. This difference can be felt easily. I usually start from Corolla as this is my favourite Toyota and then go to Yaris, x , Aygo , then rav4 bz4x, Camry. From all models the Camry was the best car by far, even smell differently inside, like a proper car.
Seats were very comfortable.
Now talking about seats the higher trim levels of Corolla GR and Excel has the most comfortable seats , these sport ones has great support, rear seats are also very comfy with good support and correct angle of the backrest. From the Yaris models only GR x has good seats, which are same shape as excel but has very nice materials. That’s my personal opinion. Once sat in Lexus ux electric and love it inside, very well made with fantastic leather materials and soft touch plastics, a top spec hybrid version will be my ideal choice for Auris replacement, or perhaps es300h.
Small cars are always on the uncomfortable side from all car makes. If you try vw polo and then Arteon you will see the difference I am talking about. 👌

IMO unless you really have to, never go for Toyota's Icon spec in any of their models.  Altho there's a big price leap from Design to Excel usually the difference between Icon and Design is small but the spec is much better,

Correct above. Got a design, the difference from design to excel was 1700, icon to design was 1000. The design is also a better sale in the future with LED headlights, privacy glass, all electric windows and a couple of other things more than icon.

Btw icon spec Yaris and Yaris x has really poor headlights at night, very similar to Auris 2013-2017. Another reason these spec trims best to be avoided as private purchase. They are ok for rental cars or companies courtesy cars. No disrespect towards any existing owners but as idea for future purchases.

Tony what would be your  recommendation for minimum spec for a private buyer?

Yeah the Icon is the only one that comes with halogens instead of LEDs - I found them fine when I had it while my Excel was getting a new backside fitted, but compared to the eye-searing LEDs in the other 3 specs you can't even tell if they're on or not

That's a shame - There are some really fun roads up your way that I'd love to take mine on a hoon along! (I'm just not willing to drive the couple-hundred miles there to find them  )

Minimum design specs for private buyers.
I always watch cars headlights at night and I can tell which ones are really good or really bad. Corolla excel and Prius excel has one of the best headlights of any car along with Mercedes’ s class.

  • 1 month later...

Left the Yaris for 4 whole days.

Came back to it and......

I have the failing 12v Battery fiasco. (currently 60-odd pages of these in this forum).

Buggering about with jump leads and a friend with a conventional car in the dark & rain.

This has finally convinced me I made a mistake buying this Yaris.

It will be traded in for something non-hybrid, non-rattly, non-Toyota, as soon as possible.

All that truly incredible technology packed into it and it rattles and has let me down.

Our previous Yaris and all our Aygos were perfect for years & years.

It seems like I'm not the only person that thinks Toyota quality seems to be getting worse. If they made the 2007 D4D Avensis again I'd have one tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that.
If me has this experience a mid spec vw polo or one of their sisters will do it for me. 👍

Probably for the best; It was very clear you were never really happy with the car from the beginning, and it does seem to need more regular use than average or at least the addition of a jump starter pack.

I hope you find something more suitable (But let us know what and how you get on with it!)

Mine's nearly 3 years old now and hasn't given me any 12v grief, but I've got a jump starter ready just in case, and it'll be getting that Yuasa Battery fitted once it does go!
