Need to turn key twice before my 1994 Celica cranks

My 1.8i 1994 Celica STi has this weird problem where I need to turn the ignition twice before it cranks and starts. It doesn't end there however, on idle and low RPM it tends to be a bit unstable, it goes up and down between 1100 to 1200 RPM. But on higher RPM's it runs as smooth as butter. I initially thought it was the fuelpump and filter, but when I turn the key the first time its the starter that remains completely silent. Second rotation works without fail.

Hi there H,

Sorry to hear about your strange problem. My thoughts are that you have a bad contact in the ignition switch, either a build up or dirt/pitting or the contacts have worn and become light, a second turn of the switch eventually makes that  all important contact and engages the starter motor. You may need to replace the ignotion switch. Also possible the inition barrel is worn now needing a second turn of the key to to get the switch to turn fully.

Would also think it's possible either the starter or solenoid has worn and developed a tendancy to stick when its sat in it's normal position. I recall my daughters boyfriend having an old Ford Capri which would only start when it felt like it. Giving the starter a good tap with a hammer would get the starter to engage and start up. A replacement starter cured that, turned out the starter pinion was sticking.

The unstable engine idle I would think is very likely unrelated to your starting  problem and could be caused by a number of issues with,  vacuum leaks, bad sensors to name few of many.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hello, thank you for the useful information. I do believe it is actually a vacuum leak, there is a hissing noise when the engine runs, and the high idles and rough performance is only noticable in very low speeds/parking. Otherwise my Celica runs very smoothly. Besides that I do think it is the ignition switch, wouldn't surprise me. The starter always starts right away at the second turn without any issues. I noticed some hoses, although seemingly secure, lack a clip. Is this an issue I should be concerned about? Or will my car last until the end of the month when my paycheck comes in? (I will be going on vacation soon and I only use my car for short trips to work and back)

A member of another forum has this same problem, his car is a Gen' 6 GT. It was suggested that it could be related to the alarm/immobiliser. So, if you have one fitted, try switching it off (some have a small key on the siren unit) and see if it starts without issues.
