Modern engine oils are designed to last, they will easily exceed 10K even in harsh conditions, hence why a lot of manufacturers have gone to the super long life oils. Two reasons, cost and and to reduce on waste (old oil) having to be recycled. There could be no good reason for not changing a filter if you are changing the oil, it's good engineering practice
