CD player faults.

Twice I have had my music center pack up on me. Says 'unable to read disc'. This does not matter whether I change the disc ir not.

The fault is the CD disc, especially if home recorded. The disc is separating and has become useless.

Remove the negative Battery terminal and leave the car for about an hour. The system resets.

Throw away the faulty disc, or rerecord it. Do not use it again in the vehicle

I have never had a CD delaminate before. I have had discs fail to write once in a while. I now mainly play music from USB via an adapter plugged into the CD changer port, at the rear of the stereo. I have not had any problems with USB sticks.

Here is my post on the subject -

Whether CD or memory such as USB. Between 2-5 years the storage will begin to break down. Sudden loss of parts stored before complete drop out

I will repeat my experience, as you repeat yours - I have not had any issues with memory sticks. I have been using memory sticks since the mid to late 2000's. I also have many burnt CD's in various formats. The CD's are in cases, soft cases which hold 50 to 100 discs. A lot of the discs I have used are quality brands. Yes they can fail over time, but how they are used and stored probably plays a part in life span.

Memory sticks, I have not had any degradation issues. I had the rare accident of knocking over a big portable speaker, breaking the memory stick plugged into it. All memory sticks I have used have been genuine and performed well. One advantage especially with newer cars is the lack of CD player. Most have bluetooth and USB.

I once got a couple of fake Samsung microSD cards via eBay and almost immediately realised they were fake. I tested one using a programme h2teatw. H2testw checks the capacity by writing and reading the complete memory. In this case the fakes memory topped out at 15mb, not the 32mb they were supposed to be. I got a full refund and managed to get genuine Samsung microSD for less than the fakes, when Maplins electronic stores closed down at the same time!

I do have CD's in MP3 and WMA format in the car, and the one in the CD drive plays fine since it was left in there since 2015.

I am not disputing your experience, just adding mine.

Average life of a CD r/RW is 15 years, 10 plus years for a USB stick - i used Verbatim disks for over 25 years no issues

A weakened laser will have issues reading CD-R/RW's ultra common symptom, it's just the life expectancy of the laser, they also lose focus due to reduce strength/lack of maintenance and wear to the lens

My first cd-r drive was a 1 speed then upgraded to one with a buffer what was a game changer
