Oil Filter Sump/Crush Washer - help needed...

Recommended Posts

Posted

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I'm going to do an engine oil change on my 2010 1.0L petrol IQ. I've had a look underneath and it takes a 'standard' oil filter, which I've ordered, but I'm not sure what type of sump/crush washer to get. On other vehicles I've used copper crush washers, but when I look on eBay it seems that this IQ might use fibre ones?

Does anyone here know definitely what I should get - and can you tell me what size to buy?

It's fibre, call into your dealer and part with £2.77 👍

Yup, the genuine one Jikky posted is a sort of thin layer of blue paper or fibre or paint or something over aluminium. I've a few from Amayama for £1 each - they were chosen from the EPC drawing using my VIN, so should be correct.

A BluePrint ADT30102 is currently holding the oil in on mine - it's an analogue to the Toyota part with similar construction, bought for my C1 which has the same engine but different sump pan (steel vs aluminium). Interestingly (if you're me 🤓), Febi Bilstein (Blueprint) do not recommend this washer for the iQ and instead only offer a plug and bare aluminium washer set (which I have and can confirm compatibility of the plug... I've kept the plain washer for the C1's next oil change).

If you're the sort of person (like me) who cares for such things, the sump plug should be torqued to 30Nm (14mm head).

One word of warning - the oil filter and sump plug are far enough apart that it's easy to misalign your container whilst in a rush and make one heck of a mess of your driveway if you estimate it wrong. Ask me how I know! 🙃

There's a little plastic panel that can be removed by taking out 3x 10mm bolts that makes access around the filter much easier for a couple of the more common types of filter removal tool.

The dipstick is a pig to read, but that's the way all these 1KR-FE are. Even worse on the pre-2012 Aygo/C1/107, as the tube takes a more conveluted route, so it could be worse.

So there you go, a little essay on oil changes. Just don't ask me whether to use 0W-20 or 5W-30 😉. Congratulations if anyone's got this far and is still awake! 😁

I wouldn’t use a fibre washer, I used one on my Corolla and when I came to change the filter and remove the sump plug, it was loose, if I had left it any longer the plug would have probably fallen out and ruined my engine!

I've got a fibre Elring one but wasn't sure which way up to put it (neither was my retired-mechanic father in law), presumably green side on the sump and paper side on the bolt(?) and got too nervous to use it, so it's back in the big bag of spares for the two cars.

What  else is there to know, hmm.

Oil filters have one of two styles of o-ring. Toyota (I think, but have never used one) and Blueprint have a round cross-section o-ring whereas many of the European-based brands have a flat cross-section. I think my car had previously only ever had the former filters as I elected to carefully remove a ring of 'burnt' oil residue from the face of the filter mounting before fitting a Hengst.

Thanks to @74hct04 for the excellent information. I must be like you, as my old mum used to say, as I was delighted to be told the torque setting! And I found your posts to be a really good read!

I'm going for the 0W20 oil (Petronas - £32.95) because I believe the owners manual!

The Blue Print filter I got off eBay is a different number to yours - ADT32109 - but I'm pretty sure it's a fit.

I responded to the OP's question, "what type of washer is it" A fibre washer is the manufacturers recommendation not mine, I sell 3000 PA without issue  👍

Are you able to share the recommended part number?

Fibre does make sense but doesn't agree with the EPCs I can find online, although I am sure the manufacturer's one you have access to is canonically correct.

90080-43037, it's cheaper from your dealer than the eBay link listed 👍

Did the oil & filter change today. Nice and easy on this car. Not a single drop spilt! The Blueprint ADT32109 filter fits perfectly. I used Petronas Syntium 7000 0W-20 oil. Yum yum! It took the expected 3.1 litres.

The sump plug washer was metal, so I replaced it with a new metal one.

Thanks to 74hct04 for the advice about removing the small plastic tray.

Always in awe of anyone who does this as a DIY job.

( With not a single drop spilt! )

It's really quite an easy DIY job (apart for not spilling a single drop of oil, that is! Go me!😄 ).

You'll be glad to hear that I changed the gearbox oil on Monday, with barely a drop spilt! *Fingers crossed* that it has eliminated the issue I sometimes get with random stiff gear changes.

I love DIY work on cars, it's so very satisfying. What I don't love one bit is the levels of anxiety it provokes when something doesn't go to plan. Sounds silly, but what was supposed to be a cheap runaround has become a labour of love of late and I feel so sad when I break something whilst trying to improve the car.
