Long journey economy report (PHEV)

We have just returned from a trip to Prague via the Hull/Rotterdam ferry. The route took us via Hanover, Leipzig, Danzig. Mileage (allowing for slight detours) was near enough 600 miles each way. Driving on 7/8th the weather was quite warm (18-22) and a gentle following wind. Return journey temperatures were 9-13 and into a strong north west wind with some rain. Using E5 fuel the outward averages were 48mpg (best 52.1, worst 44) at average speed of 53 mph (best 69, worst 44). Return figures 41mpg (51.8/35.2) and 65mph (73/48). On de-restricted autobahn sections (of which there was plenty 😁) I set the ACC to 90mph and left the sensors to do its stuff. Holland has a ridiculously low motorway speed limit of 100km/h (62mph), CZ has a 130km/limit which is fast enough but seemed slow after Germany. Am I happy? Very much so! We last did the trip 3 years ago in a Volvo V60 D6 PHEV giving around 44mpg overall. I didn’t record the speeds but drove in similar manner.

Excellent figure, I just amazed how efficient of these Toyota's.

Exactly, diesel rivalling! As an aside petrol in CZ is about same price as UK. However in Germany it is about 15p litre dearer than my typical local petrol filling station. The lack of BEV’s in CZ was also very noticeable and we saw very few on the autobahns in any country we drive through.

What was noted is the wider range of models available from different manufacturers. In CZ and Germany I saw more than one Corolla Cross and the Highlander is still on sale too. My stepsons neighbour just bought a new one last month. Saw quite a few RAV4.5’s albeit only a couple were PHEV’s.

The wife is not 100% she recent had a replacement hip, we have been driving around with the heating on, it has little effect on the EV range at present, the Outlander used to drop like a ton of brick if I dare put heater on to 16/18 miles, the Toyota technology is so much more advanced, no wonder Mitsubishi left the UK and Europe.

Mitsubishi initially left Europe and UK following an agreement to avoid group competition with Renault and Nissan. The brand has now returned to parts of Europe as rebadged Renaults to use up spare production capacity.

Very nice figures. I think a Corolla would've consumed the same if not more at those speeds. Was this with no charging at all? An initial full charge?
