Starting difficulties

Since standing for 2 weeks, my Yaris Hybrid shows a warning that the the pre crash warning is not functioning: it will not show the "Ready" sign so it won't start.  After turning  the power button andn the pre crash warning button on and off several times, it suddenly swings into normal service with the "ready" sign .  I think this is an electrical fault and that the pre crash warning is working.  How do  I solve this?

If I were you I’d get the car round to your Toyota dealer pronto. If there is an electrical fault it could turn out to be dangerous to continue driving the car. The garage should have diagnostic equipment to quickly identify the problem. Better safe than sorry!

My initial thought is your 12v Battery is on its way out and needs replacing - When they are dying, they can't deliver enough voltage to power all the computers and control modules properly when the car's turned on, and this can cause all sorts of weird seemingly random electrical glitches. Eventually, if you can get it to engage the traction Battery contactors, it takes over and all the 12v systems spring to life properly.

I'd go with what @Cyker says. A lot of batteries got degraded during COVID due to lack of use, and at 5 years old car batteries are getting on a bit. They are consumables just like tyres and (filament) bulbs.

Mine is the same age and when I get home on Thursday it will have been unused for over two weeks. I won't be surprised if it does something similar. If it does I'll get a new Battery before winter sets in because I don't want to spend months nursing a little extra life out of it while not knowing if the darn thing will start whenever it's needed.

12v Battery is low and likely will die soon. Fully charge with a smart charger or keep the car in ready mode for at least one hour. If keep turning on and off frequently with less than 30 min between start ups this slowly kills the Battery.

I get my new car next week and have already decided that at the first signs of problems I will be buying a Bosch replacement. I already have a booster pack that will do the job if needed.

Allan, my experience with the Toyota provided 12v Battery has been that they’ll last at least 5years from new, though curiously, I don’t think you get more than a 12 months Battery guarantee off Toyota for the Battery they fit in a new car. If you buy a replacement off them I think that then has a much longer guarantee - how strange!

I had to replace my 12v battery a couple of years ago & I bought one off Halfords, together with a 5 year guarantee so was quite happy. Bosch make some good stuff & I wouldn’t hesitate to by their battery but hopefully they also include at least a 5 year guarantee.

It didn't. Started fine. Should be good for another year then ... 🤔
