Interior headlining squeaking

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else’s aygos interior headlining (passenger side) squeak all the time? Mine is bad even with music on and incredibly distracting to the point I don’t enjoy driving it. Anyone else has this? How can I fix it? When I apply pressure it kind of stops but I can't drive with 1 hand prompted up against it all the time...

Please see the video to hear what it sounds like.

Based in UK, 5 year warranty expired 2 months after purchase of car, purchased from garage that sells the odd car, have 2 years 'warranty' (It isn't even worth the paper its written on...) with them but they want none of it.

What can I expect if I take it to toyota, or should I take it to an independent garage?

Hi Charlie,

If you can't hold the liner when driving ask a passenger to do so in the front and back seats as it may be transferring through from the back.

Have you tried holding the liner in various places when the squeaking starts to see if it stops. It could be transfer of sound from the A Pillar. This has been talked about before.

Presumably you have the warranty terms and conditions. Most extended warranties - which is what this will be - cover mechanical and electrical issues, rather than, for example, bodywork or interior trim (headlining).

So how long ago did you purchase the car?

I suspect it may be something to do with the windscreen. Is it the original screen or has it been replaced at some stage? A quick check would be the manufacturer's logo on the screen, and whether it is the same logo as other glass on the car.

The headlining is a single moulding of a dense rigid plastic foam. Its held to the roof by about a half-dozen beads of adhesive running front-back along the rear three-quarters of the lining. The front portion is just held in place by the sunvisor fittings. To stop the squeaking I would suggest removing the screws that hold the sunvisor fittings in place and then, using a wide plastic trim tool you could pry down the front of the headlining a couple of centimetres. Then squirt a small quantity of PU adhesive or PU foam behind the offending area and quickly refit the sunvisors. This should anchor it in place.
