Brand new Yaris...and parking sensors

I have just bought a brand new Yaris Design. I had parking sensors fitted before it was delivered and I am unsure what distances the beeps mean? Can anybody advise me please? I am assuming as it was added on (not provided as standard with my model) that it won't flash on my dashboard.

In my defence, I have just traded up from an I10 which I have had for 11 years and it doesn't even have a temperature gauge so the bells and whistles on the Yaris are a lot to take in!

Hello Sue, I have only had one car with sensors, and that was a Honda CRV.

So a very different car, but I would suspect similar function.

Simply put, slow beeps close maybe 500-600 mm away, faster beeps closer still.

Very fast frantic beeps, stop you've nearly hit something.

Do you have auto braking that stops the car if you get near something?

As RwP says, they usually start a bit under a metre away and get more rapid until a continuous tone at around 300mm. You must stop then as you'll get no more info until you hit whatever it is.

Bear in mind some thin upright posts or low lying objects, like kerbs, may not be detected, so be aware of those.

If you have front ones you should find out from the dealer how they are triggered as there are different schemes and you could find they aren't always 'on' when you think.

For large objects, such as cars, if the car is straight ahead, if I creep forwards slowly (Yaris, not Cross), until it gets to the red zone (no Airplane! jokes), and stop as soon as it goes red/continuous tone, I still have a decent gap between my car and the car in front (enough to walk through).

I've been trying to figure out the corner sensors, but they seem to beep with a good margin, too.

As MikeSh says, they are limited to what they can see, so always check before moving that you know what obstructions are there! Overhangs higher up are a particular "gotcha".

If it's like my Yaris Design (France), the sensors are included in a pack, and so built into the car at the factory, i.e. not added before delivery to me at the dealers.

They flash, first yellowish orange and give a visual indication of proximity, then red, still flashing, until the auto brakes will clamp down and surprise you.

You'll get the hang of it, and you'll wonder how you managed without, especially reversing.

Thanks All

I appreciate your responses. I think when my sensors went off I panicked a bit and didn't look at my dashboard, I will find somewhere safer to have a play and see. I think they must be triggered far earlier than I anticipated.

Somebody mentioned the rear camera - I am getting to like that. My drive has a lamp post and two brick walls to negotiate and the camera is certainly a help. All I have to work out now is to change gear quickly when I want to reverse, I could do it blindfold in my old manual car.
