Losing power

Hi folks. I have a 2006 Avensis estate (diesel) that's losing power. In first, at say a junction, when I pull it I get hardly any power for a few seconds then it kicks in. Also, on a hill, from stop to start, there's little if any power coming through.

Any self fixes before I take it to our local indie garage?

Also, there's an engine warning light that's been on for a while both upon researching it previously others suggested this wasn't anything to be concerned about as it didn't seem to be effecting anything and more an age thing.

Fuel filter, injectors, HP pump, EGR... difficult to diagnose  on here.

I'd say you're best of taking it to a garage.

Hi Will,

Some previous posts have said this a common problem and the EGR needs cleaning. Hope this helps.👍

Great. Thank you. I don't mind having a go at most things but they usually take me a long time compared to our garage who we've used for years. Wondering if this is a DIY on a dry day job or easier to send to Garage in case there's anything else it might be.

Don't want to waste time on something.

Found this great video though. https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/120290-egr-valve-cleaning/?do=findComment&comment=1509797

Just popped it round to our local mechanic. He took it for a quick spin and reckons its might be an issue with the MAP sensor.

Apologies for the late response. For those interested I bought some Diesel fuel additive and cleaner. Drove it hard/fast through the gears. Saw a bit of black smoke then after about 20-30mins drive, returned home. No problem since.

That's great news - Thanks for coming back and letting us know!

It does seem like Toyota's D4Ds benefit from some V-Power and an "italian tuneup" from time to time

Yep. I wouldn't know but for the sake of a few quid it seemed to work. Unless it was down to the "Italian Tuneup"!? 😂
