Picked up my new 2023 corolla a week ago. Not sure if I have an issue or not.

  • On one occasion a week ago when driving the central LCD screen turned black for approximately 2 seconds and then returned to the normal display.
  • Today when driving the central LCD screen turned black for approximately 2 seconds along with the instrument panel behind the steering wheel and then returned to the normal display.
  • Today I also noticed when I move the shift lever from D to P and visa versa the central LCD screen turns black and comes back on once in P. Is this function normal?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Is it going completely blank, or is it dimming as the automatic headlights come on when driving under a bridge, or a dark line of trees etc? Mine often does the latter.

I'm assuming you are the same person that posted on the Toyota Questions community and I still believe there is an issue with the display, going off completely is different to the dimming. During the dimming phase it doesn't go off it just reduces the brightness and probably changes the theme to dark mode.

The central LCD screen goes completely black and nothing is displayed, on both occasions when this has happened it's been in full daylight on a dual carriageway - no bridges - no trees etc.

As I stated above the second time the central LCD screen went black the instrument panel in front of the steering wheel also turned very dark and was just about readable.

The car is booked in to the dealership on Tuesday 31st Oct for investigation. Will update the post after the dealership visit.

Yes I'm the same person, just interested to know if anyone else has experienced the issue.

Definitely not normal.  If no fault found but it continues to do it you can reject the car.

Right PITA to do but certainly concentrate their minds at the dealers.

Yes I'm aware of that, I will give the dealership one chance at identifying and fixing the issue. When the car goes into the dealership it will be 14 days from point of delivery to myself. I know the consumer rights act 2015 allows outright rejection of a faulty product within 30 days of receipt of the item.

Three years ago I had to reject a brand new Hyundai i30n after two weeks of ownership due to a serious gearbox oil leak and ironically a faulty LCD screen.

Definitely sounds wrong to me. My infotainment unit goes (very) briefly black when engaging reverse gear prior to showing the camera output but that's all.

The dashboard LCD never has and most certainly never should.

If it were just the infotainment unit I'd suspect something related to the reversing camera or the gear lever but the dashboard going black sounds like a serious fault that should be addressed immediately.

My car was at the dealership all day yesterday, they were unable to replicate the issue with the multimedia screen and instrument panel going black / blank for approximately two seconds.

There were also no fault codes generated for the two instances that happened  (both on a Wednesday morning one week apart)  while I was driving the car.

So I have agreed to use the car and report back if the issue happens again. Not a lot else I can do at present.
