Yaris MK4 Ride

This week after sitting in the new Toyota Yaris XL and very impressed with the design and headroom space has anyone had a panoramic roof fitted. If so does this actually make the car feel even bigger inside.

Unfortunately one wasn't available to test drive but I did try a MK3 a few months ago. At the time I found the car to have a very firm ride. What are owners opinions on the ride quality on long journeys in the MK 4.?

Also any recommendations on specification.

XL? Excel?

Don't have a pano roof, it does make it looks spacious with one. The excel tyre profile is on the firm side 205/45/17. The design and icon with 16" and better tyre profile are good on comfort 195/55/16.

Long journeys are fine I find with the MK4, a bigger car like a corolla will always be better for those long distances. Had a MK3 on 15" wheels, comfort was good. The MK4 are streets ahead on improvements over the mk3, on all aspect. Just don't get the 17" wheels if u want comfort.

Thanks for that, We really liked the Excel not XL😂 I'm actually waiting for one to become available to test drive but wanted to get what owners  thought and what spec they would recommend. Have heard that the design is very popular but welcome any comments on this.👍

We have an Excel with panoramic roof and HUD. Absolutely love the car. We have driven a number of long trips (300 odd miles) each way, and have had no issues. Tyre and wheel sizes will probably make a difference, but we are happy with the way it drives.

The panoramic roof and grey upholstery makes it light and it feels spacious inside. There is more than enough power, and fuel consumption is good.

Overall, we have been really happy with the choice we (my wife, as it's her car) made.

Thanks Bob do you find the Excel comfortable on long journeys. It's one of the questions my wife's keen to know.👍

As Mojo1010 says, a bigger car such as the Corolla is going to be better for the longer, say more than 1h30, trips. However the Yaris going to be adequate, and surprisingly capable of carrying four people on shorter trips.

We take ours on regular 70 to 80 mile runs and it’s fine for that. For two people as a daily driver, I don’t think there’s a better compromise.

Excel for the equipment, though the tyre profile some people find firm, it is subjective. I got a design trim.

Edit: Try a broker like carwow for price. No option for tyre/wheel size, otherwise I would probably got an excel with 16" wheels/tyres.

Do you get the option to choose the tyre size prior to new order.

Unfortunately no !

I don’t do many long journeys but the ones I have done I’ve not found the car comfort a problem.

However, as has been said, the larger wheels do make for a ‘firm’ ride.  This, as you can imagine, is very much dependent on the road surface.  Sometimes is hardly noticeable, sometimes very much more so.

I came from a mk 3 Icon Tech so do notice the firm ride but I wanted the extra kit that came with the Excel, especially HUD and auto wing mirrors.

Once upon a time, in France at least, you could opt for different rim/tyre sizes. One of the reasons, and not the least, I went with design spec, were the 16" rims.

I should add, Bob, that not only do I do few long journeys but I am also of an age where I need more ‘comfort breaks’ than others might !

Hi, have the excel spec and very impressed. I do not have the panoramic roof or tech pack. The only additional pack I have is the protection pack + which is worth having. I would have liked the tech pack and maybe the panoramic roof but they stopped doing it when I looked to buy mine. I have driven the design trim with the smaller tyres when I had my car serviced. I didn't notice a huge difference of ride comfort with the smaller tyres. I've previously owned a MK3 and the suspension isn't as good as the MK4. The new MK4 has improved suspension and doesn't tilt around bends like the old one does more. These are my own views but hope it helps!

Yes, both my wife and I find it very comfortable. As @Graham47 says, we (my wife and I) are of an age where we need more comfort breaks than we used to. We tend to stop every couple of hours for a quick break. It's is more than comfortable for long trip.

I had the panoramic roof on my Gen.3 and it was awesome! I've got used to not having it on my Gen.4.

GR Sport Gen.4 on 18" still rides better than my Gen.3 ever did, and holds the road extremely well.

Wifes current car, a Fabia 110 PS SE-L has 215 45 tyres on 16" rims and the ride is pretty harsh. Personally I would have preferred a taller tyre but with the 110 PS engine the 45 was the only tyre specified (the 95 PS got 55 profile tyres). But just feel sorry for those poor sods that bought Monte Carlos, they had 40 profile tyres. The current Fabia now comes with 55 profile tyres on the 110 PS SE-L, perhaps Skoda got a lot of letters.

Because of that when we ordered the Yaris last month we stuck with the Design, nice softer 55 profile tyres. A few bits on the Excel appealed but sports seats always cause issues with the wifes arthritis and a light interior is no good at all with a dog (even with a hammock in the back). On the test drive the ride seemed fine (and we made no attempt to dodge pot holes if we saw them).

Same applied to my Superb, the "consumer" SE-L gets 18" wheels with 45 profile tyres. The "fleet" only SE Tech gets the same kit as the SE-L but has 17" wheels with 55 profile tyres and costs about £3000 less. Just by pure luck happened on a cancelled order SE Tech and have been happy with the magical ride for the past 3 years.

Bought ours through CarWow, way better than sitting hours trying to get a deal.

Yes, it does. It has manual retractable sunshades, which can be closed if it gets too warm or if you want to shut out any light.
