iQ1 > iQ2 > iQ3…..?

I’ve given up trying to work this out - perhaps someone knows definitively how to WHICH of the above models of iQ you’re looking at/for?   So far, I understand that all iQ’s are basically the same from launch until the end of production, with just the engine size being a major variable.  AIUI, the numeric difference indicated the trim level and nothing else (as these numbers don’t seem to appear anywhere visible on the bodywork - as a chrome Badge or otherwise?

From what I’ve seen, from launch until 2012 it was the iQ1 (usual caveats about the model year not always being the year of first registration). iQ2 from 2011 with the first refresh, and iQ3 from 2013 - is this right, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Lastly, the arrival of the TNS SatNav required a major internal facelift to the dash, clearly not everyone would have wanted the additional expense of this, so was this affected by the trim level number? Or was it simply another factory option like Day Running Lights and RearView camera?

Have a look at the following Honest John review - which was written before the site went into administration and the takeover by Heycars, so doesn't suffer from the later inaccurate info.

Scroll down to 'Model history':

The IQ was discontinued in the UK in 2014, before daylight running lights became compulsory on all new models

I have an iQ2 (keyless entry, etc) and it's a 59 plate car, so your 'iQ2 from 2011' must be wrong? I'm no expert, but I think iQ2 indicates improved features over the iQ base model.

IQ1 is base model
IQ2 is luxury model (Auto AC, Keyless, foglights, etc)
IQ3 is 1.3L model

Modelname IQ1, IQ2 and IQ3 stayed same after facelift. Some models can have ´upgrades´ that came in optional packs or sold as limited editions. Also many options were listed when the car was bought new.

Early IQ models till 2010/2011 have always brown interior parts on lower sides. In the facelift model its back or white/cream. The facelift models have a height adjustable driverseat. Also some little changes like carpet and slots for rear seatbelts.

Looking at the downloadable Owners Manual on the Toyota site, there’s a reference to DRL and how they’re switched.  Indeed, the car I’m collecting this week has them, apparently as a factory-fit, and not as an option. (This is a 13 registration) so I don’t think they abandoned the UK simply because of EU DRL being compulsory - and it wasn’t retrospective 😀. Could sales (or lack of) had a bearing?

Looking at the ‘How Many Left’ website I got kinda sidetracked as I was going to check if the figures for 2014 fell off a Cliff but there was nothing noticeable.  The figures for 2023 Q1 however are interesting - totals in parentheses are those SORNed.

iQ VVT-I = 5,300 (152)

iQ CVT = 1,500 (24)

iQ2 VVT-I = 5,500 (139)

iQ2 CVT = 2,600 (56)

iQ3 VVT-I = 1,400 (33)

iQ3 CVT = 820 (16)

So, the most popular taxed iQ is the iQ2 VVT-I by a nose (at 200), whilst the CVT models all lag behind.  So as of March 2023 there were a total of 17,170 cars active - and 320 SORNed!

My comment was in relation to the DRLs being factory fit, not re the discontinuation in the UK.

Reasons behind the car being discontinued in the UK, was down to the high cost of importing from Japan due to the unfavourable exchange rate, and low sales volumes.

The same applied to other European markets. It was also discontinued in the US due to low sales.

If DRL is no factory fit, there should be a installation manual. I have not found it yet..
Or it is never made because the IQ was already on Running Out.

The owners manual covers a number of countries, not just the UK, and the term within the owners manual 'if equipped' relates to those countries where the IQ has different requirements and specs to the UK (eg. some Scandinavian countries), rather than referring to an option.

The switch mentioned is the headlight switch, and, when the sidelights or headlights are turned on, the DRL's will turn off - as with any factory fitted DRL system on any car in the UK.

Hang on - if the iQ had EU compliance, then it was OK for UK use.  As you can see from mine, it had the DRLs fitted as standard in this 2013 model, and I’m sure every other EU country did as well.  Now we’ve left the EU things may change, but I doubt whether there’ll be much difference between a ‘23 Toyota heading for Germany or the UK.

Specifications of Toyotas do vary as it is the relevant importing organisation that decides what equipment, etc vehicles they sell within their area have. So a model sold by Toyota GB can differ from what is sold by Toyota Germany, Toyota Ireland, Toyota France, etc.

From the information in the 2013 owners manual, where the IQ has a DRL system fitted, the headlights and tail lights are used, rather than separate LED units installed by the lower grille.

I've lost patience with this now, so believe what you want.

I have to say that those DRLs look like they've been added as an upgrade. Can someone tell me I'm wrong?

AFAIK, DRL's were only fitted to newly designed/released UK MODELS and FACELIFTS after 2013. The iQ wasn't a new model - it was an existing model. Were any facelift iQ's launched in 2013 or later?

As an example - my other car didn't have DRL's as a 2010 model, but by the time I'd changed it for a 2016 version there were DRL's in the bumper, because there was a 2013 facelift.

EU legislation required new models (ie. cars with new Type Approval after November 2011) would be required to have DRLs fitted from November 2011, and all new cars to have DRLs fitted from November 2014.

The IQ's Type Approval would have been 2008.

Toyota GB announced in March 2014, that they would be taking no more factory orders for the IQ, and that sales from existing stocks would continue until depleted:

The TNS SatNav was an option from launch. I have it in our car which we bought at launch, indeed put a deposit down at the local dealer before they were formally purchasable, having see it at the 2008 UK motor show.

You can see the TNS sat nav in the car on display at the motor show below.
