Clock didn't change automagically

Car was showing 1 hour fast, as the clocks went back yesterday. Went into settings and automatically adjust for daylight saving was on, so I switched it off (as it doesn't seem to work) and some controls appeared to let me manually change the time.

Sorted

Probably requires satnav/gps to get time signal. My Yaris doesn't have satnav/gps so I had to manually change. My MX5 with these changed automatically.

You are not reading it correctly ... 😉

The car does not know the dates at which the clocks go forward and back. So, we need to go into Settings > Clock and tell it whether Daylight savings applies (On) or not (Off). And that's all we have to do ... (twice a year)

Edit:

Note that the multimedia system doesn't actually know the date at all - so has no hope of automatically adjusting for daylight saving!

The other setting is to determine whether or not the car attempts to use GPS to correct the time automatically rather than the driver having to make the odd minute correction here and there. GPS time should always be zulu time and reasonably correct. So, zulu time from the GPS + knowledge of time zone + daylight saving on/off should mean that the multimedia system shows the correct time.

Must have a look fir the DST setting,  I did mine manually.  However in Europe it displayed the correct times.

Yes, it's a bit naff but there are (sort of) good reasons for that. It could be worse. My previous car was a Honda Jazz and despite it requiring that you specify the time zone it still wouldn't enable or disable DST automatically.

Nope. GPS uses UTC and does not include local time zone information. The car could get local time from DAB, your phone using bluetooth or presumably the traffic information if enabled.

Of those DAB is probably the most reliable candidate but even then some owners - like me - have never used the radio so it might not be tuned to a multiplex and thus can't get the information.

My car is getting it from somewhere because it remains accurate (verified by my Casio G-Shock) but wherever it's getting it from apparently doesn't have local time zone information.

Easier just to alter the time yourself.

How is it easier? You go into clock settings and the topmost item is 'DST' with a slider which is either on or off. So that's one button press and a single screen tap.

Why bother going into settings. There is a button right next to the clock that is designed to change the time for goodness sake. This morning I pressed it once. How much easier than that can you get?

He didn't mean changing the numbers, you're both talking about the same thing, i.e. the slider to toggle between GMT and BST

Also thanks all for reminding me to do this - It's kinda funny as, aside from the Yaris and the clock in the kitchen (Which I also usually forget to change for a week  ) everything else I have auto-changes!

Oh and the microwave, but nobody knows how to change that and it gets unplugged so it just sits blinking on 0:00 most of the time

Yaris Cross bought during daylight saving this year, was set up by dealer on collection.  Clock did not change and fall back.  It has GPS and Daylight saving option on Multi media system both were on.  What should the correct default set up be to get it to change automatically when clocks go forward?

Thoughts?

You need to read the thread Don. The system is incapable of "change automatically when clocks go forward" - folk seems to assume that it will, but it can't.

You need to switch daylight saving Off since it no longer applies.

Anyone else’s Corolla not displaying the correct time after the hour went back?

I’ve got my set to auto daylight saving time, other than that there seems to be no way to adjust the clock other than to go for a Custom time zone.

There is no 'auto daylight saving time' setting. The only daylight saving time setting is the one labled 'DST' and it's a manual switch offering 'ON' or 'OFF'. As of last weekend it should be 'OFF' and it's up to the owner to do that.

An interesting answer above about the car not knowing the date, hadn't appreciated that, but thinking a bit more, it doesn't really matter does it? If it checks the time occasionally against some online database or gps system all it needs to know is the uk time regardless of the date.

Or am I missing something?

Realised that after reading this thread once mine was merged. Thanks 👍🏻

Well that was my expectation.  Quite poor that is doesn't.  Another to add to my review of this vehicle.

To be fair this is the first car I've had where I didn't need to set the time and manually correct it now and then so the novelty hasn't worn off yet

Current Toyotas seem to only use GPS for time data, so it's impossible for it to automatically change between BST/GMT because GPS only gives UTC/GMT time.

However, they could have picked the time up from DAB, which would have allowed it to auto-correct, and for the always-online Toyotas they can also pick the time up from Internet NTP servers - I'm not sure why they don't, but I guess the systems aren't all integrated yet. Given the CANbus vulnerabilities in the RAV4, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing

This is stuff we'll probably see in the next models - Toyota do tend to be a generation or two behind in that sort of thing as they prefer to go with older tried and tested stuff. Given how buggy the app is for the always-online vehicles, I'd rather they take more time over the software side frankly!

How would you solve the programable issue of choosing the “last sunday in october” which changes year by year.?

As above, Toyota keep the clock accurate to the second using GPS time. But GPS gives only an accurate measure of GMT/UTC/Zulu time. So the driver needs to provide the time zone offset and tell the car when daylight saving applies.

Toyota could do things differently in the future by:

  • Taking the time from a DAB broadcast - where the broadcaster is responsible for getting the time correct
  • Taking the time from the drivers mobile - where the mobile network operator is responsible for getting the time correct
  • Or even taking the time via the eSOS SIM and network operator.

In the future maybe, but for now, it is as it is ... 😉

If they used DAB or NTP to sync the time, you wouldn't need to as they would just be given the correct time, even if the DST rules changed like they did in the USA a while back.

But if I was coding it myself, I still wouldn't, as the problem has been solved already - There are standard programming libraries and tables for calculating how the DST changes for every country in the world that are available and free to use!

Good call. I’d be happy not to have to change it in 2 places “clock” and “system time”
