Reverse Light Positive wire - Red?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Just checking that the red wire that goes to the LH side reversing light is the positive feed. I've done a search, but can't find the answer, so I'm hoping some kind, knowledgeable person will confirm it, or otherwise.

I'm intending to splice a rear view Dashcam into the reverse light, and I don't want to mess things up!

Thanks in advance.

Glimp, I presume you have a voltmeter.  Simply stick a pin through the cover and attach your meter positive to it.

The resultant hole will be minute.  Used to work for me.

Thanks Roy. I have a voltmeter, but I'm a bozo. What setting should it be on? Don't trust myself with these things!

Lol, trial and error.  There should be two voltage sectors.  One will show a ~ which is for household mains, AC.

You want the one with - for DC.

Take any good AA or AAA Battery and select the range 0-20.  Use the probes and get a reading. This is safe and will confirm you have the correct scale.

You can now check the car 12v system.

But this begs the question; how do you intend to connect into that red cable?

Well, I'll cut the live feed to the reversing light, slip some shrink wrap on, wind all 3 ends together (2 ends of the reversing light and the single wire to the rear camera), solder them and finally shrink wrap the lot.  Sound okay?

I feel confident with that side of things.

I'd still be happier if someone could confirm which wire is positive.

Having re-read your post, I'm assuming you meant red for positive, not red for reverse?

The red is 12v+ when only reverse is selected

is it a dash cam or reverse cam you are fitting ? If it's the dash cam, you will need to an ignition switched live

It's a rear view dash cam (also with a front-facing dash cam) that plugs into the 12v socket (or cigarette lighter socket, as was). The only wire they say to connect is the red one coming from the rear view camera  - the rest are already connected via the front dash cam.

I assume that when you select reverse it switches the monitor, turning it into a little (3") reversing camera.

What make and model is the dash cam ?

It's a Ssontong A16, I believe.

The actual link to the precise item I bought, which I've now found, is this...

Yeah - that's what I'll be doing as soon as the rain stops! I've fed the wire through and it's just waiting to be connected.
