Toyota safety system tested, it works!

Well, the safety system has been activated in anger this morning, the mrs was driving onto the A64 slip road, we were behind a Fiat 500 with an L plate on, accelerating to join the carriageway when the car in front suddenly braked to a stop, although my wife did hit the brakes, the car did apply the automatic braking and stopped us safely, the car behind also managed to stop in time ( although it was close when viewed through the dash cam) , goodness only knows why they stopped so sharply as there was nothing in front of them , this comes after another close call I had last night on the way home from work, as my route involves a country road there’s quite a bit of wildlife, two deer ran straight in front of me and how I missed one of them I really don’t know, imagine the mess it would have done to my car, ( and the poor deer of course) let alone the expense, I wish I could work out how to post the dash cam footage on here to see what you all make of it…

Yes mine has kicked in a couple of times as well as it thought that I wasn't braking early enough 😅

This was a proper emergency stop, and change of underwear 😀

Repairs would probably have been 'dear'.

It is quite scary, esp. the first time - the AEB stops *very* violently and the car is beeping and making horrible graunching sounds as the ABS and hydraulic pumps go full-on.

It is very impressive how quickly the car can stop, but it has made me leave biiiig gaps in front of me as I don't trust drivers behind me to be able to stop in anywhere near as good time (Once everyone has AEBs I'll be happier about it!)

Well the insurers have to rake in the Doe somehow...

In the mid-90's we were on holiday in the mountains bordering Glen Urquhart. The single track mountain road leading to where we were staying had, steep banks on either side around 12 foot high.

One evening whilst travelling back to our lodge, a deer leapt from one bank to the other, over our car. Had quite a good view of the deer's underside through the sunroof .....

Similar to Frosty,  a stag came up from the Loch.  How it ended up on the opposite slope, with a broken leg, I don't know.

It was obviously hit by the car approaching me but I didn't see any impact or the stag going over.

Called at the next cafe who then called the Factor.

Oh lordy, another pun thread 🙄

Sorry, I don't have time to fully participate, I am getting ready to go to a stag party for my grandson's best mate's uncle's brother.

It's at a town centre pub , so I need to order a taxi to the roebuck.

Yea, it happened once where even though I was braking smoothly, it activated and went hard all the way to a full stop and I looked in the rear mirror and the driver behind was terrified, the look on his face!

I'm not entirely sure what the technology is like, but it brakes harder and comes to a full stop faster than I can by slamming the brakes? So it makes it even harder for the driver behind to react?

I know it forces people to keep distance but uhm... we're not there yet? Mixed feelings, taught me to keep more distance from the one in front, for sure. In one way it makes me feel safer, in other ways I'm worried I'll get rear ended soon. Oh well

Never had any issue with my car safety sense, only with the driver’s sense 😁

I did tell her to drop back a bit or to overtake in the other lane, but I’d barely finished speaking when the car in front suddenly stopped, credit to the driver behind who just managed to stop in time, annoyingly it would be her fault for running into the back of the car in front, still, the old adage, “ expect the unexpected “ is true in this case…

And she’s never had an accident….witnessed hundreds, but never had one herself…🤭

Sounds like the learner panicked on the slip road and assumed they had to stop and give way before joining the A road. Even some regular drivers do this, very frustrating!

Yes, maybe, but the person next to her should have given the correct instructions, I think they’d be better with a proper driving school…

I watched an inevitable crash in progress on the old two-lane M5.  I was in the empty inside lane and the outer lane was packed.

I had only recently read an article explaining that in a line of close spaced stop go traffic, given driver reaction times, you would reach the point that you were accelerating hard as the car in front was braking hard.

As I watched, the lane 2 cars were behaving exact as the model.  This older car, possibly 50s vintage, rammed the car in front.

My abiding memory was clouds of dust from under the wing with clouds of steam.

I carried on at a steady 40mph

I get the lane merging thing a lot - One of the stupidest things about the driver training in this country is Learners did not get given any motorway training at all, and even now I think they can but it's optional.

My mates in europe find this bizarre and stupid - I even had a mate in Germany who got taken on the Nurburg ring by his instructor as they have to have something like 4 lessons minimum on an autobahn!  (I as jealous at the time but now I find the idea of that terrifying   god I'm old...  )

You can always tell a new driver on the motorway as they never go fast enough to merge on the onramp - I usually try and move over to give space where I can, but sometimes you can't, and it'll usually be when some knob is staring in their wing mirrors and slowing down on the onramp instead of speeding up to sync with a gap.

This was a real nightmare in my Mk2 as, if I couldn't move over, I often had to slow down even more to try and accommodate them as I knew the car couldn't accelerate fast enough, but in my Mk1 D4D and Mk4 hybrid I can just floor it and let that instant torque carry me away from them to safety

It doesn't always help. I used to service a VX490 for a guy years ago and he loved the car, polished it every weekend and growled if you went near it for any reason.

He went on holiday in it to Devon, narrow lanes, grass in the middle sort of thing.

Massive bump later and a cow had slid through the fence and landed right on top of it. Car was a right off.

Automatic braking would have to be something special to avoid that one. Cows from above and probably not something the designers cater for.

Yeah, no matter how many contingencies you try to plan for, you can't plan for 'acts of god' (Or in this case, cow)

Still, that is a bizarre one - Did he pick a fight with Earthworm Jim earlier or something??
