It doesn't always help. I used to service a VX490 for a guy years ago and he loved the car, polished it every weekend and growled if you went near it for any reason.

He went on holiday in it to Devon, narrow lanes, grass in the middle sort of thing.

Massive bump later and a cow had slid through the fence and landed right on top of it. Car was a right off.

Automatic braking would have to be something special to avoid that one. Cows from above and probably not something the designers cater for.

Holy cow, bet that scared the cr*p out of him.

Friend's dad hired a car one of those once fashionable faux leather roofs.  How do you explain to the hire company "a horse chewed the roof".

I get the lane merging thing a lot - One of the stupidest things about the driver training in this country is Learners did not get given any motorway training at all, and even now I think they can but it's optional.

My mates in europe find this bizarre and stupid - I even had a mate in Germany who got taken on the Nurburg ring by his instructor as they have to have something like 4 lessons minimum on an autobahn!  (I as jealous at the time but now I find the idea of that terrifying   god I'm old...  )

You can always tell a new driver on the motorway as they never go fast enough to merge on the onramp - I usually try and move over to give space where I can, but sometimes you can't, and it'll usually be when some knob is staring in their wing mirrors and slowing down on the onramp instead of speeding up to sync with a gap.

This was a real nightmare in my Mk2 as, if I couldn't move over, I often had to slow down even more to try and accommodate them as I knew the car couldn't accelerate fast enough, but in my Mk1 D4D and Mk4 hybrid I can just floor it and let that instant torque carry me away from them to safety

My Brother and Nephew live in Germany. Whenever they come over to visit, they are both always astounded and appalled by the low standards of driving on our roads. I have to agree, so many examples of bad driving all the time. My work commute is 30 miles each way, 18 miles of it on M1. See some scary bad, dangerous activity. it's why I always pay extra for personnel accident cover on my car insurance and have dash cams fitted.

Yes, driving standards are falling way short in some cases, nobody plans, or anticipates anymore..

Quite wrong surely,  unless you are in the 'nobody' group.

I plan ahead.  I continually assess traffic flow and consider diversions as we approach each junction.

Sadly,  yesterday,  we were right on a slip when I diversion would have been ideal.  It would have required a sudden pull off and potentially dangerous.

What I would say, the hybrid encourages anticipation.    I find nothing more rewarding that coasting the last quarter mile to stationary traffic that moves on exactly as I arrive.

Sounds like the learner panicked on the slip road and assumed they had to stop and give way before joining the A road. Even some regular drivers do this, very frustrating!

I keep coming across folk who do it at roundabouts. You can see them looking directly ahead and they only turn their heads after they've stopped.

Yes, I like to do this, but it doesn't stop me from being overtaken by others who are more "important", who then hit the brakes hard to wait for the light to change.

Absolutely correct. Not only no one anticipate ahead but when you do so yourself you become a dangerous road users become everyone else is racing around and you are like an object to be overtaken, undertaken or beeped at and called abuse. Welcoming to modern days driving standards.
Those fellas out there that drive normally and travel in their cars are less and less.

If you watch these dash cam videos quite often the cammers cars seem to accelerate into danger just so they can get their vids on there

I get unreasonably happy when I do that - I just love it when I've timed my coast so I don't even need to brake, and catch the tail of traffic just as it moves off and don't even have to really slow down, but just carry on coasting, with a bit of gentle power added

I refined that sort of thing with my diesels, but it's even better in the hybrid as I can run on just the electrics for extended periods because I'm putting in so little power, just enough to extend the coast!

And when I want to give it some on the country roads it's ready for that too :naughty:

This thing suits my all my driving styles so well, it feels like it was tailored for me!

Alas that's something that will happen - I get that frequently due to my leaving bigger spaces in front, but the way I think of it is I'd rather have the nutters in front of me than behind, and as above I derive some smug satisfaction when the person ahead of me is stop-start-stop-start when I'm coasting along without needing to brake because I've got my buffer gap and average speed spot on

It's funny as even when people cut in front of me I often don't even need to brake, just lift a little while they speed off into the back of the person I'm following and have to brake again, while I keep my coast going with just a slight adjustment in response to the change of cadence.

Corolla is one class above so will be the better comfort car. If space isn't too important then the Yaris is the one that makes financial sense. Could even opt for the Yaris 130.

I too was weighing up the pros and cons of Yaris v Corolla 2.0 before I chose the Yaris as that makes the most financial sense for my overall use of the car.

I’ve watched quite a good few of dash cam videos and a few of those camera users are actually rude and can see the mote in the other drivers eye but don’t see the plank in their own.

Just yesterday, I had to deal with not one, but two nutter HG drivers.

Generally, I consider the big truck drivers safer than car drivers, I think the worst are white van drivers, be they courriers (parcel delivery), or artisans*. Those trucks were pushing me to go faster when I was already at the limit, I expletive deleted already hate that attitude, not to mention how dangerous it is. Having a monster truck up my butt I hate.

Now you know why I prefer not to have any cameras installed in my car on top on all other reasons. For the truck drivers definitely one if not the worst one out there. I understand they had been pushed a lot by their bosses or contractors but risking their life’s and life’s of others just to fulfil stupid time slots etc not worth it.
The problem we have todays with drivers is lack of self control and discipline.  We only had less accidents on record because of the vehicle technology, which also complements the poor driving behaviour along with use of drugs, I am sure that many drivers even those professionals are on drugs most of the time.

That's truer than I'd care to admit. I'm sure similar reports are/have been shown in the UK, but on French TV quite recently there was a segment on Envoyé Special (A current affairs/news insight show) about drivers using cocaine, and being un repentant about it 😳!

I'm another one who drived like this. Love my Hybrid.

This is something I've been complaining to Highways about with their stupid 'Smart Motorways' - Whenever they set the speed limit to 50mph or less on an otherwise flowing road, this triggers a load of tailgating by trucks, and at 40mph they all start moving into the outer lanes to overtakes. How is this making things safer??

IMHO they should never set a speed limit below 60mph just for 'traffic calming' - If anything they should be using speed advisories for that, but they're a bit control-freaky and don't like that if they set a 40mph advisory on an empty road, people will slow a bit for caution but otherwise rightly ignore it when they can see it's totally clear.

Personally, my response is the same as what my instructor taught me - If someone's tailgating you, gradually and slowly slow down to leave an increased gap to the car in front, so if you do need to stop you can slow down more gently and reduce the risk of the butt-sniffer from crashing into you. This also has the handy side-effect of persuading the tailgater overtake on multi-lane roads and motorways, which mostly solves the problem.

I get a particularly perverse pleasure when this happens to me and then I very slowly undertake the truck a short while later, because the outer lanes are all jammed to a halt and only the 'slow' lane is still slowly moving because we're keeping a safe separation distance from each other to keep things flowing, instead of hanging on the back of the person in front and being forced to stop when they slow down

Oh lordy, another pun thread 🙄

Sorry, I don't have time to fully participate, I am getting ready to go to a stag party for my grandson's best mate's uncle's brother.

It's at a town centre pub , so I need to order a taxi to the roebuck.

Robert De Niro was fantastic in the film “The Deer Hunter”.  However,  he was way behind the time as in Glasgow they had bespoke dance evening known as “Grab a Granny Night”.  The stags looking for a dance partner were given the name - “The Auld Dear Hunters”.

Oh aye, the Doner and blitzen shop round 'ere is doing a turkey leg kebab "wont kranberi sorse wivit" they say , to add the ambience to the season of good cheer.

I just think that they are cashing in on the time of year.
