No google maps directions over FM radio. Touch 2 with go

Avensis 2016 1.6D

Good morning,

I have Avensis 2016 touch 2 with go. I have no google maps directions over bluetooth when fm radio is on. music, maps directions work perfectly fine via bluetooth when head unit is set on bluetooth only, just doesn't work when FM radio is on. Google maps settings are setup to speak over Bluetooth. I have tried all troubleshooting available on the web, changing google maps settings, resetting Bluetooth, re-parring etc but no luck. Can someone advise how to fix it?

Regards,

Peter

I don't think you can do that. The "Media" selections (FM, AM, DAB, bluetooth, Aux, USB) are for effectively selecting which audio source to listen to. Therefore when it is set to FM, you will hear FM radio and nothing else (so no bluetooth, but equally no DAB or USB or anything else either). There is no facility (as far as I am aware) to have bluetooth sound overlaid on top of other audio. Which makes sense I guess - what would it do if you are listening to FM radio and you press the play button on the media player app on your phone? If it played the audio from the media app you would now be listening to Bluetooth audio while have FM audio selected, which would not make sense.

As said above. No fix that's what it is. No radio if u want to use sat nav, bluetooth only. Newer multimedia, version 3.0 I think when it has ACP/AA then can listen to radio with sat nav direction.

I simply stream 6 music via the BBC Sounds app via bluetooth and Apple Maps simply cuts over it when it wants to make an announcement.

It doesn't work if you're listening to radio directly as far as I can tell.

I am a bit surprised by this limitation. I have a basic CD/Radio with bluetooth for phone calls only in my 2009 Avensis. The bluetooth does not support music audio, though there is the AUX socket for external sources. It does support navigation directions from my Nokia Lumia (since retired), regardless of the source playing. I added a Bluetooth/USB adapter via the CD changer port, and that also supports voice navigation from my phones, cutting in then resuming whatever I am listening to - radio/CD/USB/AUX/Bluetooth streaming.

It seems my 'old' system is more flexible than the later Touch & Go! 😲

I would hesitate to call it a limitation - it is a totally different way of working. Because the Touch 2 Go system has built in satnav and bluetooth connectivity, it works completely differently. Particularly when it comes to satnav - it has built-in satnav so it would be strange to allow a bluetooth connected device to cut in with satnav instructions, otherwise you could have the bluetooth connected device's satnav talking over the top of the built-in satnav! In short the Touch 2 Go system has the ability for the built-in satnav to cut in over any other audio source, and a system like yours has the ability for a Bluetooth connected device's satnav to cut in over any other audio source. So same thing done differently.

Welcome to the Toyota Touch with Go 2… a world of solid promises, that will be broken and haunt you every time you interact with it… surprised that Toyota couldn’t come up with something better. But until very recently nobody else really had either.

Are you using an iPhone?

the source of the music / sound input seems to trip up the system.  The only thing the cars system can really handle are calls and the default ‘music’ app. Although iPhones can now change the default to another (Spotify etc) I’m not sure the Toyota system understands.  When I go from music to podcasts, the car can’t cope. My phone changes over. And the system says “No audio”.  I have to manually go in and reselect bluetooth as a source to hear the podcast. This is because the Podcast app is now separate from music.  I have to change source to ‘Aux’, ask Siri, THEN switch back to bluetooth for the system to start playing it through the car.

it might be as bad with android. Especially as it has a more sophisticated volume management across different app system.

my main point is, it doesn’t take much to trip up the TG2 In our Toyotas.  Perhaps if you’re getting audio voice messages from Google Maps, it goes through a different ‘channel’ on your phone and as your TG2 system is streaming from your music app, it doesn’t have a way of playing the audio from both apps at the same time - although one would be safe in assuming that that’s an obvious thing to want.

other simple things to try, is your app setting on your phone definitely set for Google maps to speak? And is it off mute / volume turned up?

lastly… there’s a guy on eBay I’ve used and he can get you a map update for around £30. No idea how.   You give him the code from your sat nav. He must be putting it into Toyotas website legitimately as he issues you an activation code and a software download. Stick that on a USB stick.  Install it in your car. Enter that code.  And you’ve up to date maps - built in.  Much cheaper than the £111 I see Toyota selling it for.   If you use your built in maps, you’ll have no issue with the voice guidance being able to lower the volume.

Hope that’s of use

It is a limitation to me, and Joe's reply is one of a few reasons why. Since I don't have Touch & Go or built in nav, but from what I know, many users tend to Google maps from their phone via bluetooth, than the built-in nav. The issue is the built-in maps become out of date and cost silly money. When I need to, I can use voice commands on my phone while driving to get new directions. Also I like the fact Google can advise and re-route from traffic during navigation. This is why Android Auto and Apple Car Play are better, they are flexible, as is my standard CD radio with bluetooth.

I use my phone too, either typing the address before the journey, or using voice commands to a new destination when driving. Very important as it reduces having to touch the phone while driving.

It is a different system to that which you want, and that is absolutely fine. But as I mentioned above, I would hesitate to call it a limitation of the system, just a different type of system. A very different type of system indeed, as explained in my first post.

As for the map updates, they were reasonable value at £105 for 3 years of updates when I bought my car second hand in 2021. But that appears to have been withdrawn and replaced with single updates for £120, which is disappointing.
