Recommended Posts

My 2018 CHR always shows 2-3 bars of Battery.

How to full charge the Battery ?

Is It normal to have only 2-3 bars ?

How to know if the Battery has dead ?

Thank you

If your HV Battery was dead then it wont start.

I expect it drop down 3 or 4 bars then clime back up so bar 7 or 8 is lit then drops again it keeps a lot in reserve.

You can check condition of Battery yourself using Veepeak ,Carly or other scan tools with Dr Prius app on your phone.

Note Scan tools plug into ODB-2 port.

Then you can see this IMG_0663.thumb.PNG.5b82afa02e1a4d7e4b163aeb26d92241.PNG

The normal hybrids (As opposed to Plug-in or *hurk* Mild) normally try to keep their batteries around 50%, the newer ones especially.

If they go over 50%, they try to use more electric, below they favour the engine.

80%

My Yaris Cross usually has the Battery status at about 50% as @Cyker suggests. The only time it goes higher is if I am doing a speed of around 60+ mph and then it drops back if I resume my 'normal' speed, which on the roads I normally use, is between 30 and 50mph.

All good answers.
80% hybrid Battery is actually maxed out and on the app pass 79% soc the Battery icon goes red and starts to blink as warning and the engine will start to discharge the Battery to around 68-74%.
50% battery soc is the norm indeed. You only see it well over if you drive long downhill or waiting in the car in ready mode and heating is on set at 22C° or over. Hybrid batteries last long time, 10-15 years no problem. With the time the battery will lose a bit of its capacity, the tail tail signs are quickly reaching full charge and quickly discharge, especially when using AC. Side effects are slower acceleration even with full battery unless you smash the pedal. , more often engine discharge cycles, actually annoyingly often. But as long as the cooling fan is clean, battery holds normal charge and has ability to start the engine and help drive the car there is nothing to worry about. Just keep driving until dies., this event comes with numerous warnings on dashboard so you can’t miss it. 👍

Agree.  Max display is 8 bars.  5 or possibly 6 is the maximum I have seen (when I looked) and 3 the normal minimum.

These batteries are programmed to operate between 20% and 80% charge as this is best for long term Battery life. While the Battery will go to full if you are driving down big hills, it won't seek to go to 100%. I have never seen my Battery go below 20% charge. I would imagine the car is programmed to always stay above this as their is no advantage to going below this.
