I am looking at a 2017 Yaris 1.5, anyone have any experience of this engine compared to the 1.33.

Toyota says it is more economical than the 1.33 but Autotrader says different, it can switch between otto and atkinson combustion cycle

and had electric vvti. Not that common

The 1.5 in the 3rd generation petrol Yaris, was a development of the 1.33.

The NR engine family is dual vvti it's not uncommon, 1.5 is the 2NR-FXE and the 1.33 is the 1NR-FE what's identical apart from the displacement and emission equipment

the 1.5 is the better engine, especially for motorway driving, real vs book MPG is 2 different things

1.5 engine is clearly better and newer so I would go with that one if I had a choice

I had a 1.3 Yaris for 5 years followed by a 1.5 which I have owned for 4 years. The 1.3 is very free revving but you have to keep them high to make decent progress. The 1.5 feels to have more torque needing less revs. I find I am getting approximately 15 per cent better fuel consumption in the 1.5.

Just realized i made a mistake

2NR-FKE is the non-hybrid 1.5

1NZ-FXE is the hybrid 1.5

The 1.33 was replaced as it couldn't meet the change in euro standards (incoming Euro 6d-temp)

These are the dates for new type approved vehicles - most manufactures are in compliance 12-18 months before this

  • Euro 1: January 1993
  • Euro 2: January 1997
  • Euro 3: January 2001
  • Euro 4: January 2006
  • Euro 5: January 2011
  • Euro 6: September 2015
  • Euro 6d-TEMP: September 2019
  • Euro 6d: January 2021
