Radio illumination

Hello Everyone 👋

Has anyone had any problems with their illuminated radio window? My radio works fine, but this window (see attachment) has stopped working. Is it possible to replace the light source without replacing the whole radio please?

Thank you very much for any help.

Jonty (York)

the LCD has died, shine a torch in the display and see if you can see anything, As it's a 2000 car it will be Japanese build, used parts are fairly inexpensive

If it's just a bulb you can probably replace it, but I can't remember if those used electro-luminescence for the backlight.

There are companies that specialize in repairing things like that (e.g. BBA Reman, as seen on Wheeler Dealers), but they're probably fairly common in breakers yards given how old and plentiful the car is.

There are a few different styles of the headunit but AFAIK they're interchangeable.

Hello Again

My apologies for the delay in acknowledging your kind replies, Bob and Cyker

I can indeed see the monochrome LCD in the daylight, but it's not possible in the dark. So it's just the illumination element which has packed in. It's irritating. My mechanic reckons I'd need to replace the whole thing (as in the bit on Ebay).

Thank you.

You can take it apart, being early 2000's it should just be a bulb, let me have a google

edit, had a look at the service manual it's 2 bulbs

edit 2. Turn on the ignition and lights, press and hold the bottom left button on the display for 10 seconds until it beeps (it should be the Mode button)

Good Morning Bob 👋

Just read your message from Friday. Sorry for the delay AGAIN!

SO kind of you to help me like this, really it is. I shall try your suggestion later today when I get back home. How on earth do you find out what to do?? You're very knowledgeable. I shall let you know what happens.

Bless you Bob 🙏🏼

Just re-read my first message and I must apologise to Bob and Cyker for not being very clear. I should not have said that the display was not working, rather I should have said the backlight was not working.

Anyway I shall try your suggestion tonight, Bob. Thanks again dear chap.

Hello Bob 👋

I tried your suggested procedure last night and it didn't work I'm afraid. I pressed and held the MODE button and it beeped after about a second. I kept it depressed for about 10 seconds, but nothing happened. In fact the only thing which was ultimately depressed was me.

Any more ideas? Do you know if it's easy to change the 2 bulbs?

Thanks

Jonty

2/3 bulbs not sure if they are soldered or socketed

Take it apart, take photos as you go

I have tried looking for the lamp part number, but can't find much, more than likely 0.9w 12v panel bulbs at a guess Edit. Looking at the diagram, they are run at 5-6.5v

Before you do that check for 12V on pin 17 (18 pin connector) with the lights on

Thanks Bob. I shall show this to my mechanic as I'm hopeless at this sort of thing.

Once again, I'm most grateful for your excellent help! SO kind.
