Your Avensis actually has a BMW engine so I doubt it will be involved in that recall.

Make sure we never run the car to empty tank.  Fuel pump will be toasted instantaneously of we crank the car on empty fuel.

I always run my cars right down to light burning for a long time and fill it right up as I can't be bothered filling the cars up. I did this with every car I had I see no problem running them right down.my last car I used to sometimes run it right down that low it ran out of diesel lol 🤦

Light on is not empty, it is warning. Typically about 2-3 gallon left when the light is on.

But if the car shut off from running it to completely empty, some people are ignorant or just stupid trying to start the car again. It will burn the fuel pump.

Was your car working properly before the issue occurred?

This won’t apply to you. You can check any recalls on the Gov.UK site. Toyota would have contacted you too if it was an outstanding recall.

That’s a myth. If you look at the fuel pump in most modern cars it sucks from the bottom. If you run it empty-empty to the point of having so little fuel the car won’t start then yeah the air will quickly destroy the pump itself. People who run it incredibly low so long as it doesn’t run out entirely won’t be doing any harm in practice.

All diesel in the UK has detergents and cleaning agents. Premium diesel has even more if you run that every so often or all the time you’ll have the same alleged benefits of the likes of Redex etc.

Easy job to replace. Can be costly to get a new pump.

Will the car start at all? If not, try getting someone under it to gently thump under the middle of the diesel tank. If the car starts whilst this is being hit, that’s a sign the pump has kicked the bucket.

Curious; was the diesel filter changed every 37,500 miles as it’s supposed to be?  People often think replacing things like that are stupid but it can often lead to situations like this.

I’ve attached the system description for the 1WW / 2WW diesel pump in the 1.6 and 2.0 last Avensis line diesel engines. And how to install a new one in case you go the DIY route. Components.pdfInstallation.pdf

As the car is well outside the 5 year Toyota warranty by now, no chance of getting them to cover it as good will or part covered under good will.

If your dealer sold it to you with a ‘full service history’ but can’t prove that the diesel filter was changed around 37,500 or so then you’re within your rights to reject the car. Yes, consumer rights act has you covered. Even a used car comes with a ‘reasonable expectation’ to not just break down majorly after the warranty runs out. I’ve had to explain that to an independent dealer here a few years ago when an older Mazda 6 my sister bought engine seized. Initially they came out to look, and said tough luck.  I had them take it back and they sorted her out with a similarly aged but cleaner Vauxhall Astra….

Your situation could be because it wasn’t serviced when it should have been - not your fault. You’d expect it to have been done especially buying from a trade seller 🙂  let them take the brunt of this.  Don’t let them off with it so easy.

these are BMW engines, make no mistake. They are extremely fragile compared to the robust Japanese engines we expect from most Toyotas.  As such they will suffer if not serviced like clockwork.   Sadly now we’re getting to the stage where the earliest 2015-16 models which maybe haven’t been serviced with the correct oil or often enough are starting to go bang.  Nobody rolls an eyelid when BMWs that aren’t babied go bang. Same story here, just in a more down to earth package.

I hope you get sorted. If you need to know ANYTHING about the fuel system to troubleshooting or diagrams etc, I’ll send you it through right from the repair manual. Our cars have the same series of engine. I have the docs for both sizes.

We had destroyed fuel pump before by running it to empty and the car shut off. The problem is,  we have t tendency to keep trying starting the car. In hybrid,  that is  less problematic, because it won't start the engine first.  In regular car,  cranking the engine force the fuel  pump.
