There are many ways to prevent harvesting from your devices with the right application.

Like what?

I'm an electronics & computer specialist and once permissions are allowed there's very little you can do from a phone or tablet to stop it.
You presume that a security app is setup & looking for what that particular app is doing.
I use Malwarebytes Premium on my PCs & phone but I doubt it is able to prevent harvesting from a virtually unknown app supplied for the BM devices where you are forced to accept their permission terms.
I was going to get a BM2 or BM6 but after reading the reviews I decided it was sensible to avoid them.
Use an old deleted phone by all means with nothing on it (ie without banking, social media, email) with a separate user login for Android or Apple but never use your main life phone you use everyday with these devices.

That is exactly the kind of solution I was going to suggest, but using a private DNS like NextDNS is an additional way to prevent nefarious outgoing traffic and provides extra outgoing firewall functionality.

Yes agreed Colin, but 99% of Toyota members here won't know what we are talking about or have any idea how to do it.
Even with my IT experience I've decided against - it's not worth the effort.
Let's invest our time & effort into obtaining better 12V batteries, awareness and safe trickle charging.

I understand where you are coming from, Paul, but I've been paranoid about data security ever since my machine code and PDP11 days long ago and (more recently) after attending a few "whitehat" security courses. But you're right. I'm getting ahead of myself! LOL!

Check out the MyToyota app. The permissions are the same. Chinese chips, American phones made in China, source code for programs available on the Darknet. Where's your security?

Excellent Colin😁. I worked at Systime in Leeds in the early 1980's, doing QA on DEC/CDC hardware. Steep & fast learning curves! We digress oops - apologies to everyone else, back to 12V batteries!

No it's not as simple as that.
The Toyota & Mazda Apps (I don't use either BTW) will be much safer and only do what they are supposed to do, secure to those companies.
They will likely sell or integrate your login email & App data but nothing else from your phone.
Of course the companies are still liable to data breaches as is anyone else.
The BM2/6 app will likely be deceitful and not secure whatever you do.

Check out your own email address(s) on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see if your details have been in a data breach.
Invest in Malwarebytes Identity Theft Protection (or similar) if you are concerned.
