DAB+ radio

Is the radio in the older versions of the Yaris able to tune DAB+ stations? There is going to be a big switchover in January of many stations from DAB to DAB+ and I don’t want to lose the ability to listen to them

You will be fine with a 2019 yaris.

I had a 1.3 2017 model previously and that had DAB+.

Just to add to my reply. There a fair few stations  already broadcasting using DAB+ including Gold, LBC and all the Heart decade stations.

If you can receive these you will be fine when Classic fm changes to DAB+

I was wondering about coverage and whether DAB+ would be better or worse.  Then it occurred to me that I can sometimes pick up BBC when I loose LBC or TalkRadio.

I think that is the answer,  at the moment DAB+ is more restrictive with dead spots.

In answer to your question Roy the BBC national stations switch between DAB and FM to help maintain reception when driving in poor signal areas.

The BBC DAB transmitter network does have more fill in transmitters though to minimise signal loss..

I find DAB to be a waste of time.  Put your radio on BBC Radio Two and it will be with you all over the country.  No other stations are needed. 😀

Oh I didn't know about that, that's good news! The government's decisions to block DAB+ to protect existing DAB users put us back at least a decade on uptake because DAB is so much worse than DAB+, esp. in cars.

Most cars already support DAB+ so you should be okay, but if you search the model of your headunit you should be able to look up what it supports.

Do you have any recommendations on where people can search to see if what's in their Toyota Yaris supports DAB+ or not? I've searched for whether the Touch 2 with Go I have supports DAB+ and found nothing which says it does. But also I can't anything from Toyota which states that any Toyota head unit supports DAB+. The distinction of DAB+ in marketing for DAB radios in general (not just Toyota) seems very lacking. The DAB part of my car radio  mysteriously stopped working recently and the talk of broadcasters soon ceasing to broadcast on DAB and move to DAB+ now makes me wonder if there is any point in spending money trying to get it working again.

Sadly no; As you say the differentiation between the two has been pretty terrible; Most people don't even know they're different!

You could try e-mailing cr@toyota.co.uk - Sometimes they're helpful, other times not...

I would think your handbook should tell you the specs of your radio.

I've recently looked into this. (Did I have a DAB radio or a DAB+ radio?)  One simple way to find out - search for Boom Radio.  If the display says 'Boom Radio UK' it's a DAB+ receiver. If it just says 'Boom Radio' it is not DAB+.  Simples!

Or try Classic FM next month.

If your radio predates 2008 then it is not DAB+.  If later than 2016 most probably is DAB+.
