MY confusion

I’m a little confused about the use of MY in describing your cars.
i thought there is a clear cut-off is in the definition when models either have a face lift or a model change.
Soo….  In the Prius mk4/gen4 the only MY are MY16 MY19 MY20 which represent the model changes (16/19) being the light facelift and (19/20) being the transition to Carplay.
my 2022 reg , delivered in May 2022 is still categorised as a MY20.

I see a lot of references to MY21 MY23 MY24 in many of the forums here, are Toyota really changing the specs every single year or is this just people not understanding how the classification actually works?
