I own a 2012 Yaris nsp130. unfortunately, it doesn't have a light on the instrument panel showing that the headlights are on. is there a way to add such a light to monitor it?

The head lights on my wife's Yaris are so dim I gave to shine a light on them to see if the're on!

Easiest way is a small £3 12v buzzer.

The red wire connects to the + of one car front lights (side light is best) the black wire is connected to the switch on the door that operates the internal light.  If the lights are on, then it will buzz, if the lights are off, then silence. If you park with side lights on intentionally, buzz will stop when door closed.

I've got this on my 1993 MX5 where I use the side lights as DRL's (very bright LED switchback indicators/sides) and am forever forgetting to turn them off.  Works 100% of the time.

This would connect exactly the same way as the 12v LED you want, but is, in my opinion, a better solution.

Sample eBay buzzer (but lots to choose from)

It does have a reminder if in auto mode don't worry about it, they turn off when you get out of the car

the lights are BCM controlled, don't add anything to the wiring especially if you have auto lights

green light on the dash for side lights, blue light for main beam/flash

does your interior light work correctly ?

I think that's what the OP wants to change. I too would like an indication that the headlights are on/dipped and not just sidelights. There are times when the ambient lighting is such that you can't tell by looking at the road and I've often driven a little way before realising I'm still on sidelights. It's another little annoyance, but I don't think there's any easy fix.

I am certain my car works out if it dull day then headlights switch on automatically but you can overide this to sidelights if you forget to turn them off when you open the door a riminder busser will sound.

My use case involves a fair amount of time waiting for passengers, usually in Ready mode so I can have the radio and maybe A/C on. Out of consideration to others I try to turn headlights off in that situation, so auto lights is not vey useful.

And I wish the 'buzzer' was a buzzer but it's a high pitched tone (similar/same for some other warnings). Between having passed three score and ten and chronic tinnitus I can usually only hear those alerts in a quiet place and holding my head near the dashboard. For a car with an 'old person's wheels' reputation someone seriously goofed on the focus group selection 🤣

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, you are referring to an "auto mode" which I don't know what it is. I'm attaching a pic of the light & direction switch in my vehicle.

Ok you have standard lights not Auto lights

if you leave the lights on and remove the key from the ignition, and open the door, the warning will sound

Unfortunately, that's not the case. it never had that buzzer/sound alert and I'm sure about it since I'm the first owner of the vehicle. in order to be completely sure, I've checked again. maybe this option is not included in all Toyota Yaris models. the lack of any kind of notification is what brought me the need to look for it, at the first place.

If more details can help, I can PM you the whole VIN.

sorry my mistake doing too many things at once

VNK = French Built

see if you have the warning switch on the ignition barrel (red arrow) and test it to see if it's working correctly, this detects the key in the ignition
