End of life accounts for 2004 Toyota Avensis 1.8 Vvti estate

My 54 plate Avensis 1.8 Vvti t3 estate has now reached the end with an MOT failure for rear suspension corrosion. I have worked out the costs and went back to find this thread to see how they compare. I see that I didn't think the running costs of my previous mark one Avensis would be bettered.

So how did the costs compare?

Purchase £750 18/7/2019 at 87932 miles.

Sold for scrap and received £400 on 4/12/2023 at 126349 miles.

Therfore net cost or depreciation of £350.

Ownership of 4 years 4 months and 16 days rounded to 52 months.

Driven for 38417 miles.

Average mpg over 35893 miles was 44.18 mpg

Parts and service items bought and fitted by myself was a total of £478.81

Parts, labour and MOT test fees paid to local garage totals £1742.04

Therefore, £350+£478.81+£1742.04=£2570.85

2570. 85 ÷ 52 = £49.44 per calendar month.

Now clearly I received a flattering scrap price, more than I expected which has helped the figures.

My work on the car was 9 oil and filter changes, 1 set of spark plugs, 1 pencil coil, 1 set of front brake pads, renovate headlights, 1 cabin filter and 1 Battery

My local garage did, 5 MOT tests, driveshaft oil seals left and right, wheel bearing and weld silencer, air con re gas, 4 tyres, exhaust sections, 1 pair brake pads, polish headlights and finally weld catalytic converter.

That's a shame,if not for the corrosion would probably have carried on for years yet.

Are you going for another avensis?

It is a shame, it was crusty underneath when I bought it, perhaps could have benefitted from previous owners washing after driving on salted roads.

Unfortunately the 2009 onwards Avensis is a bit too wide and long for me to get in and out of my garage. An Auris tourer would be a good fit but the prices of Auris tourers are high and there weren't many for sale close to me so I have bought a Hyundai i30 estate.

I would have liked another Toyota but wasn't possible this time.

Still looks good from the outside. Was it rusty somewhere else except the suspension?

Yes the whole underside was crispy so had I had a new subframe and rear suspension it is likely that sills and floor would have been next.

Replacement rear suspension parts needed for MOT were £623 plus vat plus labour.
