The MSM is reporting that local councils are cancelling Christmas festivities and many are going bankrupt despite the Government providing £5.3 billion in funds.

Why are they going bankrupt? Council tax, business rates and Government grants are the highest they ever been. They are also reporting that many local services will be cut back.

I struggle to see where the money is being overspent for them to run out of money and look to bankruptcy. However council tax bills will “inevitably” rise to cover the cost of a £1.6 billion public service pensions blunder which has forced local authorities to set aside millions of pounds in redress.

Basically down to mis-management.

Not just down to the local authority pensions, which are likely to be just the tip of the iceberg.

Things like Birmingham's equal pay problems; numbers of councils having over/out of control spending on capital projects; costly cycle lanes which are little used when complete; seeking competent legal advice before making changes to pensions schemes; etc. The list goes on, and these types of issues seem to be spread across numbers of councils .........

Mis -management yes absolutely as you say Birmingham council £750million equal pay claims they cannot afford. Inevitably service cuts and higher council tax to offset some of this.
