Flat battery

Hi everyone,

I have a 67 plate Yaris Hybrid which has failed to start ~4 times in the last couple of weeks. At first I put it down to the cold weather but now I'm not so sure.

When this has happened, every warning has come up on the dash, it reads 'Visit dealer', the windows don't work properly, the middle screen flashes on and off again and the engine doesn't start. After a few times, or after sitting with the warnings for a few minutes, it eventually starts. I'm assuming it's the 12V Battery, however, I use the car every day and commute 30 miles to and from work each day, so it's not because the car is sitting on the driveway.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice please? Do I need a new Battery? We've had the car for ~ 3 years now and had no issues up until this point.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I tend to agree, most likely new Battery time I'm afraid!

But doesn't the Mk3 use a different-sized AGM Battery? I don't think the 45Ah Yuasa flooded type that our Mk4's use would be suitable...?

Yes, just replace like for like. The OP's description suggests that it's an elderly Battery that winter has caught up with. It's a consumable item, so just replace it.

If the replacement fails within a year or two then things might be more interesting.

12V Batteries are good for 3-4 years, maybe a bit more. The factory fitted batteries are not always the best, anyway. So, get a new Battery.

Ours have a standard Battery.

The freezing weather over the last few weeks will drain your Battery by 30 t0 60%, this current balmy 😂 weather, your Battery may well be better now, don't be fooled it needs replacing as other have suggested.

I'm back again! So having looked online, everywhere where you can also get a new Battery fitted are out of stock. I've found them online to order myself, just wondered whether anyone had any experience of replacing it themselves, is it difficult?

I had a tough job getting access to it today and check which one I had, getting the back seats up was not easy!

Thanks in advance 😊

But now you've done it it'll be easier next time.

Are you OK with spannering Battery terminal clamps?

(I've used Tayna for batteries lately. Decent prices and they come well packed.)

Make sure you are ordering the right Battery first then check poles are correct ie on right side to match your Battery then check clamp type & dimentions limitations.
