Hello everyone

I'm new to the forum, I'm on my 3rd toyota now( previous on Avensis and Yaris ), sadly got some issue now with my Rav4.

One day on the way back from lake district gearbox starts playing with me, it's a 2008 manual 2.0 petrol and the symptoms are is not holding on 2nd gear, right away when you change from 1st to 2nd it will stay for couple of seconds and then popping out of the gear, other gears working ok so driving at the moment with skipping 2nd gear. Done it 7k miles since I bought it (120k on the clock now) and never had any problems with it. Anyone had similar issues or know what that can be?

Hi Kamil, a number of problems can cause this issue one of them maybe a possible worn syncromesh. Does it jump from 2nd gear to neutral. Have you scanned for possible fault codes which may identify the problem.

Also have you tried to double clutch when changing from 1st to 2nd to see if it still jumps. It also could be how hard the car was driven prior to your purchase.

Hi Kamil, As I said in my previous post a number of issues may cause this problem. You haven't said if you have run a scan to see if any fault codes show up.

Other causes of this issue are outlined below, however other members who have experienced this problem may give you more advice.

This seems to be a common problem on worn-out transmissions. You shift into gear, and the transmission jumps out of gear.

Once again, there could be other several causes for this problem, besides a worn-out transmission:

A common problem is a worn out, stretched, or maladjusted shift linkage. A stretched linkage can be caused by a damaged engine or transmission mount. An external linkage can wear out or become loose and maladjusted, causing the transmission to jump out of gear. Look for rust and binding. You can try to adjust the linkage. But in most cases, you'll have to rebuild or replace that part of the assembly.

You may be dealing with a weak or broken spring in the shift rail. In an internal shift linkage, the spring is part of the spring-loaded ball that locks the transmission into gear (detent). If the ball slips out of the notch, the transmission will jump out of gear.

Also, you may be dealing with a worn-out pilot bearing (the gap causes the input shaft to vibrate, which causes the shift forks or synchronizers to move).

You may have problems with a worn synchronizer or shift fork assembly or other internal components.
